Round 1 Categories: Crazy Weather We’re Having! – Players on the Championship Team – It’s a Gas – Greek Cuisine – 1930s Slang – The Play’s the Thing

Tyler found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Greek Cuisine” under the $600 clue, with 10 clues to go after it. He was in second place with $3,200, $4,000 less than James in the lead. He made it a true Daily Double and took a shot with avocado. That was WRONG.

Made from the roe of the grey mullet, avgotaraho is sometimes called this delicacy “of the South”. show

James finished in the lead with $9,200. Robin was second with $1,200 and Tyler was last with $800.

Round 2 Categories: Monty Python Phrases – Inspectors – Social Studies – Out-of-Office E-mails – A Fork in the Road – “Take” it

Tyler found the first Daily Double in “Social Studies” under the $800 clue on the very 1st pick. The scores were the same as above. He bet the $2,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Robin found the last Daily Double in “Monty Python Phrases” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues to go after it. In second place with $5,600, she had $22,000 less than James in the lead. She bet $1,000 and drew a blank so she was WRONG.

This, in the film of that title, is defined in part as “be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book” show

James finished in the lead with $29,600. Robin was next with $4,600 and Tyler was in third place with $1,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE DEERSLAYER”?

James Fenimore Cooper’s 1841 novel “The Deerslayer” can be called a prequel. It was the last to be published of the “Leatherstocking Tales” but relates events that happened earlier than in “The Last of the Mohicans,” “The Pathfinder,” “The Pioneers” and “The Prairie.” In Chapter 2, Natty Bumppo tells “Hurry” Harry March how the Delaware Indians came to call him “Deerslayer,” adding: “They say their traditions do not tell of another who had shed so much blood of animals that had not shed the blood of man.”

This old clue from 1988 shows his other nicknames: AMERICAN LITERATURE ($800) James F. Cooper character also known as Leatherstocking, Hawkeye, Long Rifle & Deerslayer

Tyler came up with “Tom Sawyer.” He bet and lost it all.

Robin had “The Deer Hunter.” She lost $1,300, leaving her with $3,300.

James got it right. He bet $20,000 and won the game with $49,600. His 17-day total is $1,275,587.

Final Jeopardy (4/26/2019) James Holzhauer, Tyler Lee, Robin Falco

James had a low scoring game ($49.6k), compared to his sixteen day average of $76.6k (which is almost the old one day highest score) but respectfully higher than his lowest one day total (after missing FJ) of $27k.

James also had a lower payday than the winners of today’s Wheel of Fortune.

ABC’s broadcasting the entire NFL draft is certainly a pathetic attempt at programming and their feeble attempt at attracting males back to their network. But Fox, who carries J! & WoF, has preempted them for local programming, including sports broadcasts and parades. Blasphemy!

  2. Shirley says:

OMG….I was like “FISH OUTTA WATER “” No jeopardy’ tonight.
Just not fair. That’s MY most enjoyable 1/2 hour of TV viewing.

  3. Dana says:

Thank you for the update! Felt like an addict when I was missing it tonight!

  4. Mariss says:

thoroughly in awe watching James. Doesnt seem pretentious and enjoys himself. Too bad the draft had to pre empt Jeopardy tonight, was looking forward to watching. Gosh could the NF L draft started at 8pm Boo hoo on this football junk

  5. VJ says:

So now we know the reason that James smiled so widely when he got this “Talking Dead” clue on Tuesday:

“Here lies one whose name was writ in water” & “Feb. 24th 1821″ are writ on the tombstone of this tubercular poet”

James mentioned in the chat that every time he and his wife Melissa (who was in the audience) have been to Rome, she brought him to Keats’ grave and said they will buy the little piece of land next to his grave so they can be buried there. Alex told Melissa that they can buy that whole section of the cemetery now.

P.S. to Melissa: I got plebeian

  6. Casper says:

Is the nfl draft that important???

    • Jeffrey M. Metcalf says:

Not important enough to be on network television. And I’m a huge NFL fan.

  7. aaaa says:

$49,600 probably is a record for highest score attained without the aid of Daily Doubles.

    • VJ says:

Ah, yes… so funny that before James came on the show, there was nothing but day in and day out griping about how no one could win over 4 games and how deficient the ToC field was in terms of 5x and over champs. Now, it’s James had a bad game unless he makes over $80 thousand dollars. LOL!!

After James’ run, I wonder if a $30K+ payout will forever seem ho-hum

  8. rhonda says:

No Jeopardy here because of the yucky NFL draft.

    • Alan Sherman says:

The draft is on ESPN. Why did the local NYC and PHL stations have to cancel Jeopardy and Wheel. Don’t we fans count as much as NFL fans? Awful programming on the part of the local ABC affiliates.

      • D says:

like the Draft couldnt start at 8:00 pm,
, Really… I love football but this Jeopardy was like the Super Bowl , there is more to life than football……

    • Lou says:

Same here, Both shows (wheel and Jeopardy) are preeempted here. Why must ABC do this to us? Looks like we have to wait till sunday at around Noon time for the game. Saturday night is a repeat of last season (Season 34) Why couldn’t they put the draft elsewhere like on ESPN instead of ABC, Rhonda? At least James won today without the daily doubles since his opponents missed FJ. It was a good day tonight for our champion though.

  9. VJ says:

They just had a $1000 clue in early February that mentioned Natty Bumppo in a New Jersey Hall of Fame category: “This 19th century author & creator of Natty Bumppo got the call in 2015”

A rare sighting of Cordell Hull in that E-Mail category today — not seen since 2016. I picked him for a clue response that wouldn’t show up in the last week of Season 34.

    • VJ says:

Sorry that some of you got preempted because of the NFL draft. These are the clues that were on today’s sneak peek from the category THE PLAY’S THE THING:

($200) Seems like Alan needs help– he’s been doing terrible things to horses

($400) Seems like Timon needs help– he gave away all his money, now he eats roots

($600) Seems like Elwood needs help– he pals around with a 6-foot spirit in rabbit form

($800) Ouisa realizes there’s only this “between us and everybody else on this planet”

($1000) To keep his wife Corie, Paul risks frozen toes by walking this way

  10. John Christian Ambion says:

The week ended with the first time James didn’t find all three DD in his advantage, and the FJ, though, was a tough nut to crack. I have a feeling that James not finding all three of the DD would put a halt to his plans. Yesterday, he would to make it past 56 games. Now, it’s dropped to 50 games. I have a slight sympathy for Tyler and Robin, but those two could be the reasons why James’ DD domination came to a halt.

  11. Lou says:

Well another week of a clean sweep for James since he didn’t need those daily doubles to win big today. But still the novel is about deers and Tom Sawyer has nothing to do with it. Not really sure why Tom mixed up Mark Twain with Fenimore, but still though when was the last time you read this book VJ? Although no record broken for James today I think he could do it next week. The deer hunter wasn’t a bad guess but I thought the opponents had knowledge of literature today.

  12. JP says:

I think that caviar are fish eggs is very well known. But that ‘roe’ is a term related to fish is far less well known. I knew what caviar was when I was ten years old, probably, but, as I mentioned, only learned what roe was a couple years ago, when doing crossword puzzles for the first time.

  13. JP says:

It’s possible that Tyler was only considering proper names, as I thought might happen this morning, in which case Tom Sawyer is as good a guess as any I would come up with.

Not too surprised by the challengers missing given the relative obscurity of the work (relative to the usual FJ lit responses).

  14. Bob Chang says:

If anyone else won $49,600 it would have been the highest in 2019, but for James It’s about $25k less than his lowest top 10 score! Austin Rogers is a big star who entered April with two of the top 5 all-time wins, but now it’s two of the top 15.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Bob Chang
“Unreal” is just one of the many words that come to mind. The only thing the players who go up against James can do, is say “I’ve been there too”. Like an “extra” in “Ben Hur” or “Spartacus”…..

  15. John B./I. says:

I am not so sure that J! picks the strongest qualified opponents for James. Avocado a fish product???? JJ was clairvoyant with the “Deer Hunter” possibility but “Tom Sawyer” killing people and deer??
James did not even get one DD today, still a runaway and not even close. James had more than six times the amount before FJ than his nearest opponent……
Well, congratulations again for win#17, 16 of them runaways…..
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND ,EVERYBODY AND STAY SAFE!!!!

    • JP says:

The first daily double doesn’t mention fish directly. The only reason I was able to come up with the correct answer was learning ‘roe’ during a crossword phase a couple years ago. Never heard of ‘mullet’ as a type of fish before, so that wouldn’t have been helpful to me either. I’m guessing he decided to make an educated guess from the word ‘avgotaraho’.

      • John B./I. says:

        @JP
roe are fish eggs, of course if you don’t know that you wind up with with a fruit, where the avocado is actually a huge seed. So , no, it did not say “FISH” per se, but roe are found in fish fcol!🙄

        • John B./I. says:

          PS
That caviar are fish eggs is pretty common knowledge imo. You do have different types though, from black and small to bigger and almost orange/reddish caviar from sturgeon to salmon, but mostly from sturgeon in the Black and Caspian Sea.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I. With Tyler and Robin finding all thee DD, it seems like these two are, say like, worthy opponents to James. I mean, if James could have find at least one DD, bets at least 50% of his score, and got it right, it would’ve turned into a huge runaway, one way or another. But Tyler and Robin found them, and they bet just little.

      • John B./I. says:

        @JCA
Tyler made it a true DD and was wrong..Robin bet only 1K and was wrong as well. Had she bet everything she had (5.200) and been RIGHT, she MIGHT have prevented a runaway. But she was wrong on the DD anyway AND also in FJ…
        So no contest yet again….

        • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I. Not finding at least one of the DDs would be James’ undoing, not the high stakes, not the gutsy moves, but would end his amazing run. This is the case of today’s game, where Tyler and Robin found DD and it turned James’ performance into a low-scoring runaway. If, at the astronomical possibility, that James would not find any DD, his streak would come to an end.

    • Malibu Barbie says:

Except they are not picking opponents for James. The contestants are chosen well in advance and then they are randomly assigned to games (the exception being that on the Wednesday taping days, there are usually two local “alternates,” one of whom is chosen at random to play the last game (Friday game) taped on that day.

      • John B./I. says:

        @Malibu Barbie
It’s the “random” thing I am sometimes not 100% convinced of….probably I’m wrong, but who knows. There is no proof. Same with the DDs. If they were shown to the (TV) audience before a round is played, then they WOULD be random and could not be “moved” during the round….it would eliminate any possibility of manipulation.

        • VJ says:

I think if they polled viewers on whether they would want to see where the Daily Doubles are in advance, the majority would vote a resounding “NO.” Personally, I like to guess where they are going to be.
