Final Jeopardy: International Film Awards (6-30-16)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/30/2016) in the category “International Film Awards” was:

Released in 2011, it’s the only film that has won both the Oscar & France’s Cesar for Best Film of the Year.

New champ Christie O’Shaughnessy won $14,401 yesterday. On the last day of the month, her opponents are: Shyamlee Patel, from New York, NY; and Dolph Chaney, from Homewood, IL.

Round 1 Categories: Where Am I? – Familial Terms – Historic Nicknames – Rhymes with Tickle – Leftovers – The Red Auerbach Trophy

Incredibly, Christie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Historic Nicknames” under the $400 clue on the very first pick of the round. Everyone was at zero and it won’t be a factor in this match! She bet the $1,000 allowance and guessed James Madison. That was WRONG. “So now you’re in second place,” Alex deadpanned.

U.S. President: The Duel Fighter.  show

Dolph finished in the lead with $3,400. Christie was second with $2,000 and Shyamlee was last with $1,200.

Round 2 Categories: The Supreme Court – Musicians On TV – Old Names for Chemical Elements – Central Park – How Novel! – From “M” to “N”

Christie found the first Daily Double in “The Supreme Court” under the $800 clue on the 7th pick. In the lead with $5,600, she had $2,200 more than Dolph in second place. She bet $2,200 and she was RIGHT.

The court’s cookout wouldn’t be complete without these 2 past justices, first names Warren & Felix. show

Shyamlee found the last Daily Double in “Chemical Elements” under the $1,600 clue, with 4 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $9,600 now, $3,400 more than Christie in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Natrium. show

Shyamlee finished in the lead with $12,000. Christie was next with $10,200 and Dolph was in third place with $5,800.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE ARTIST”?

This black and white mostly silent 2011 film is, according to IMDB’s Trivia page, “considered to be the most ever awarded French film in film history.” It won Best Picture and 5 other awards at the 37th Cesar Awards on 2/24/2012. Two days later, at the Oscars, it won Best Picture again, as well as 4 other awards. See all the awards showered on “The Artist” on IMDB. Even Uggie the Dog won one at Cannes!

“The Artist” was also the FJ answer on 7/20/2012 (RECAP LINK). The category was “Recent Films” and the clue was: One of its first lines is “I won’t talk! I won’t say a word!!!”

Dolph bet $5,795. That brought him up to $11,595.

Christie bet $1,401. Her score rose to $11,601.

Shyamlee bet $8,401 so she won the match with $20,401 and she will be the returning champ on the first day of July.

Final Jeopardy: Christie O'Shaughnessy, Dolph Chaney and Shyamlee Patel

Two triple stumpers from the match:

    Family, the show referenced in the $1000 clue in Rhymes with Tickle, didn’t air on NBC, but ABC;

Good call on everyone correctly answering Final Jeopardy, VJ.

I don’t want to contradict here, but if Christie had correctly answered the first DD, she would be at $1,000 instead of -$1,000, which is a $2,000 difference… and Christie was trailing by $1,800 going into Final Jeopardy. So I would say that the first DD did have some importance.

By the way, Uggie was a Jack Russell Terrier who, in addition to “The Artist”, also had a role in the 2011 film “Water For Elephants”.

    • VJ says:

Oh, you can contradict me. I make no claims to my observations being the last word :):)

The IMDB trivia page I linked to says that 2 other dogs named Dash and Dude were also used, but Uggie had the most scenes (This link goes to that specific entry)

Also, you were right about Christie. Two right predictions in a row on the champ going home. Congrats.

      • Mathwiz100 says:

Thanks VJ… though to be fair, I was wrong about all of the other predictions.

    • EricS says:

Of course, it’s just not that simple, as the game would have played out differently. Naturally, with all other aspects unchanged, Shyamlee likely would have bet a lot more on the last DD.

      • Mathwiz100 says:

Good point…. maybe the DD did not matter after all.
        Of course, it’s basically speculation.

      • VJ says:

Yeah, we can speculate but we’ll never know. I just posted 11 clues from the match over here (man, they had a lot of images today!) and I found on that $1200 Central Park clue about the oldest man-made object in the park that the Park’s website says the answer that Christie gave is its name and the answer they wanted is a nickname.

        • Mathwiz100 says:

I was hoping that someone would bring that $1,200 clue up… correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the conversation go:

          Chrisitie: What is the Obelisk?
          Trebek: … be more specific.
          Christie: What is Cleopatra’s Obelisk?
Trebek: No, the correct response is “Cleopatra’s Needle”.

Christie should have received credit for specifying, even if she didn’t say “Needle”.

        • VJ says:

Yes, that’s how it went, except Alex said: “They were hoping for ‘Cleopatra’s Needle.” That’s the way it’s known.”

Central Park’s page on the attraction says: “The Obelisk, nicknamed Cleopatra’s Needle, is the oldest man-made object in Central Park, and the oldest outdoor monument in New York City.”

        • jacob ska says:

Alex: There is a museum in Indiana, PA named after this actor who starred in “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
          Contestant: Who is James Stewart?
Alex: No. We wanted Jimmy Stewart his nickname.
That’s how I felt about Cleopatra’s Obelisk not being accepted. We all knew what she was talking about. Why insist on Needle? I thought there would be a reversal but it never came.
          Give me a break!

        • VJ says:

Maybe you only get one pass per game. I’m kidding, ha ha ha, but they gave her the $600 on the Bureau of Labor Statistics clue when she said National Labor Statistics Bureau. idk, I think that one should have been called wrong and the obelisk one right.

        • EricS says:

Jacob, does that make Indiana and Pennsylvania contiguous?

        • jacob ska says:

Eric, lol. As always I enjoy your posts. They keep me laughkng. 🙂

VJ, congrats on your 3/3 prediction. The Supreme Court DD is hysterical. Can’t wait to see this match at 7 pm in my time zone.
