Final Jeopardy: On the Internet (4-20-22)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/20/2022) in the category “On The Internet” was:

This website launched in 2015 with 3 offerings, from James Patterson, Dustin Hoffman & Serena Williams

11x champ Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, won $244,882 so far. In Game 12, she takes on these two players: Loni Lewis, a teacher librarian from Charleston, SC; and Sean Wong, an IT support student from Wayzata, MN.

Round 1 Categories: The League Leader – Beach, Bay, “B” – Actors, Initially – Theatrical Happenings – We Are Swolemates – The Hunger Names

Mattea found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Theatrical Happenings” under the $1,000 clue with 4 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $7,400, $6,400 more than Loni in second place. Mattea bet $2,400 and she was RIGHT.

Mattea finished in the lead with $11,000. Sean was second with $1,200 and Loni was last with $1,000. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: European Literature – The Scientist Who… – The Singer’s Country of Birth – Not Too “Sex”y for You – Captain America – I Can Do This All Day

Sean found the first Daily Double in “Captain America” under the $1,600 clue on the 11th pick of the round. He was in second place with $4,800, $9,400 less than Mattea’s lead. Sean made it a true Daily Double but didn’t know the answer so he was WRONG.

On the Internet

The last two times one player was left in Final Jeopardy! were in Kevin Walsh’s 4th game on 10/13/20; and Kristin Sausville’s 2nd game on 3/12/2015.

The lone contestant left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS MASTERCLASS?

Last April, Cynthia Littleton published an article on Variety about David Rogier, the founder of MasterClass.com: “A lot of it was thinking about how do you bring the joy back to learning, Rogier says. “If you talk to most people about did they like school, the answer is ‘No.’ If you ask people if they like learning, the answer is, ‘Of course.’”

The first celebrities to come on board in 2015 were those named in the clue — Dustin Hoffman, Serena Williams and author James Patterson. They were highly successful in three different fields with top honors to show for it. Since then, the list has grown to include eight additional fields and many well-known names. It ain’t free but what aspiring voice actor wouldn’t want to get a voice acting lesson from Nancy Cartwright? Or how about guitar lessons from Carlos Santana? It doesn’t look like they have a free trial or offer of a free class over there on MasterClass, but they do have a a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

Mattea bet $5,000 and won the game with $26,400. Her 12-day total is $271,282. That didn’t look like this but I put Loni and Sean back in to show second and third place.

I just don’t get modern players not hunting for daily doubles. Any opponent could get lucky by hitting one and doubling up and all of a sudden it becomes a close game. I feel like it’s more a matter of time before that happens to Mattea, which is a shame because I want her to go on an even lengthier streak.

  2. Jason says:

Yuck! What a stinker. Again, lackluster contestants lead to a boring game. And, Mattea didn’t even go for $21,399, when she had, literally, nothing to lose? Or, bet zero? Plainly, she does not strike me as a “super champion” type. As I said before, she does not go deep into the TOC.

Our local TV station, which is out of Philadelphia, covered the rarity of Mattea being the only contestant left standing at the podium for fj. The station showed the fj footage at 11:30 p.m. and mentioned that it is rare but it does happen. We live outside of Philly but it’s stations are our newsfeed courtesy of Comcast.

The clue, ‘A legendary surfing spot ‘Ehukai Beach on Oahu’s North Shore is known as this pipeline, a Japanese cheer.’
    The answer, ‘What is Banzai?’
However, the wave shown in the video, a right break, was not Banzai Pipeline which is a left.

  5. Howard says:

Thanks to all who pointed out the rarity of losing two players for FJ. I was curious.

FJ was fairly easy if you paid attention during the peak of the pandemic when that site was so popular. This game was over before the first commercial.

Lots of toughies today. Surprised no one got MRE, but that’s a pretty ancient expression. Also knew the MIT/Tufts county and the NYC Marriott hotel. Helped to be from the Northeast.

Me too Howard i also got the hotel one and the mit county. Did you get the clues on law and order and the flash plus that VAF clue?

Shocking finale. Never saw this coming. This is why VJ & I always write “or however many left standing” when we predict a triple solve on COTD in the mornings. As VJ stated in her recap this has happened before. It will happen again but when no one knows.

Mattea is a powerful champion. I enjoy watching her play. Can’t wait to see the game this evening. The next Tournament is going to be loaded with very sharp contestants. Will be must see TV. 🤤

  7. Lou says:

Those triple stumpers on the next page I recognize because as a fan of the long running tv series on NBC and the WB, I still find those actors and actresses having a good time on them. Yes I also have been to Cape Cod so many times. One was camping at a couple of state parks and the other was enjoying martha’s vineyard and bicycling around Nantucket. Those places brought back so many great memories and I will definitely consider going there again soon.

  8. Lou says:

Aw too bad that Loni and Sean couldn’t play final today, but still this is probably the third time that we had a single player since Kevin Walsh and Kristen Sausville. I’ve never seen this happen with super champs in the past before. Also VJ, I noticed that that Mattea is 8/12 for final jeopardy so far so if my math is right that means she only missed 4 final jeopardy clues but I can sense that her confidence is building up. There wasn’t much competition for her today and I would really like to see Mattea getting a good challenge tomorrow, don’t you want to see that happen as well?

This was a good clue for final today, I always wanted to try and take voice acting someday.

  9. Ismael Gomez says:

The clues weren’t nice to Loni and Sean.

  10. Kevin Cheng says:

How many times on Jeopardy that we had a single player FJ? We know the most recent one was 10/13/20 and before that was 3/12/15. Also, it’s good to show who gets second and who gets third.
