4x champ Steven Grade, a sports industry consultant, has won $88,300 so far. Steven finished in the lead with $16,800. Anika was next with $13,600 and Erich was in third place with $9,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE ELVIS PRESLEY & ARETHA FRANKLIN?

Elvis Presley, the King of Rock & Roll, passed away on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42, despite the many sightings and conspiracy theories that claim otherwise. Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, was 9 years younger than Elvis. She passed away on August 16, 2018 at the age of 76.

Counterparts: – wikipedia has a whole list of honorific nicknames in popular music. Janis Joplin, Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks have all been dubbed “Queen of Rock & Roll.” Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and James Brown have all been called the “King of Soul.”

Erich didn’t have a response. He bet and lost it all.

Anika had Elvis and B.B. King, the King of the Blues who died on 5/14/2015. She lost her $5,601 bet, finishing with $7,999.

Steven got it right. His $10,401 brought him up to $27,201, today’s winning total. Steven’s 5-day total is $115,501 and there’s a guaranteed invite to the next Tournament of Champions to go with it.

Doesn’t Erich look just like Robbie Benson?

  2. VJ says:

Everything else aside, props to Erich for doubling his score on the last 3 clues of the match

LINK: 10 more clues from the game (including the “Fuel” category where Erich got the last 3 clues)

Prior to 2003, contestants who won their fifth match resulted in three new contestants on the next show.

  4. John B./I. says:

There is no “reply” button under your post, VJ. I give you Aretha, but not knowing Elvis?
Not a generation thing, sorry. Erich did not even get him. THAT’S what I meant with “you don’t have to be British….” YOU know who Elizabeth II is, right?

    • VJ says:

when there is no “reply” button and you want to respond in the same line of comments you hit reply on the top comment. I can’t believe YOU couldn’t figure that out!!!

      • John B./I. says:

Well, are WE in a good mood today…….thanks so much for your instruction and lecture!

        • John B./I. says:

Besides, rhonda had just ONE post and no “reply” button, so there is no TOP comment. Where do you hit then??? When the blogger only posts once and is down the ,line w/o a” reply” ????????I’m going to bed, getting a headache.

        • VJ says:

The top comment in that line was mine — the one that started with “Except you don’t even know” —

Rhonda had not even commented yet when you replied.

    • JP says:

I’m certain all the contestants know who Elvis was (and who Aretha Franklin was). But how does not knowing that Elvis died in 1977, or not remembering that Aretha Franklin died in August of last year, imply that the contestants don’t know who those people are? That’s just flat out a non sequitur.

The frequency with which some people here conclude that a contestant is completely ignorant of some one or some event because they did not know one particular fact about said person or event (or knew the fact but did not connect the dots from the hints on the clue) is astounding. Everyone here is obviously very bright, so I just cannot comprehend how the same absurd line of reasoning happens day after day.

      • VJ says:

It’s nice of you, JP, to point out the faulty reasoning and I hope it helps some posters realize that these extreme conclusions are ridiculous. Believe me, I have tried many times to no avail.

Now for some more on Elvis — as I said this morning, I’ll never forget the year Elvis died because it happened a month after my son turned one but I had forgotten the exact date by now. It was quite a shock because Elvis was just 42 and I remember how the scandal sheets used to delight in running stories about his weight gain and how horrible he looked for several years before that. He was a joke, then he died and was a saint.

Another thing I remember is a guy telling me that he wanted to go down to Memphis but he couldn’t because he had to go to the unemployment office. I thought that was so odd. I couldn’t understand it because he had never even seen Elvis in person at a concert.

Also, back then and for many years after (idk about now) when a person that famous died, they would preempt all your shows and run stories about whoever it was. If it was someone who had been in movies like Elvis, they would play all the movies. In Elvis’ case, I’m pretty sure they did that on his birthday for a number of years thereafter.

      • Albert says:

Plus the players only have 30 seconds and have to do the mental math.

    • JP says:

@John That actually reminds me. Didn’t you think the answer to that railroad clue a couple days ago was Vladivostok? I mean, I can’t believe you’ve never heard of Mecca. Don’t you know anything about Islam? I mean it’s one of the world biggest religions, and Mecca is their holiest city. This can’t be a generational thing – Islam has been around for centuries.

      • John B./I. says:

        @JP
Millenia, actually. Ca. 1.5 or about 1500 years. But then I’m not on J!. Plus I don’t think Erich misread the clue liked I did with the Mecca clue.

        • JP says:

Oh, so you not solving the clue didn’t indicate that you didn’t know that Mecca existed, or that Mecca was a holy city in Islam, or that it was the end location of the hajj?? You could know all those facts but still not have solved the clue?

  5. William Weyser says:

Congratulations, Steven! You were able to do what 8 other 4-time champions before you weren’t able to do, and that is win their 5th game, and because of that, I get to say this ”Welcome To The Tournament Of Champions!”.

  6. Lou says:

Erich should have known this one I mean it’s quite easy. Elvis came to my mind in an instant. But the loss of Aretha Franklin still brings back memories for me. I mean how did he miss this? Since he is a music grad student surely he must have heard of Aretha Franklin right John and VJ?

Anyway congratulations to Steven for being our five time champion. I guess that commercial came true for him. It’s been six months but still the 4 game curse has been broken. Welcome to the tournament of champions, Steven.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
Yeah, I already mentioned the irony that a music student did not even get Elvis. Ah, well.
Never a dull moment on J!…..😉

      • Lou says:

The irony, well. I guess that song can’t help falling in love with you didn’t even cross Erich’s mind. It’s so popular and even all of us here know it from our high school years, John. That hint should have pinpointed him to Elvis Presley. I hope it’s not a generation thing here.

  7. Dal Higbee says:

Finally a five-time champion. Congratulations, Steven Grade! Welcome to the Tournament of Champions.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

And there you had it. This answers the promo “Next Great Champion”.

  9. John B./I. says:

Btw, “You never walk alone” you put up VJ, is the song of Liverpool FC, my favorite football team. At each home game over 60.000 people sing this.
Anyway, as Cpt. Renault said in “Casablanca”: “I’m shocked, shocked”. Yes, I only predicted 2 correct but I figured that everybody would get at least Elvis. So a big boo-hiss to Erich. Anika’s B.B. King was not THAT outlandish because of the “Monarch” in the clue, he and Aretha died only about 3 years apart too, and she got Elvis. I’m not American and did not come here till 1984 but even I knew the answer before I finished reading the clue.
But a quintuple kudos and congratulations to Steven! I honestly – though his first game was a runaway – had not pegged him as the next 5 game winner. But seriously: do people not remember anymore what happened not even 50 years ago??? Elvis is just the most recorded and best selling solo artist EVER worldwide and we stayed within the U.S. with both FJ artists.
Imo one of the easiest FJ in a long, long time. Well, at least the curse is broken after about 5 1/2 month!
And nobody of us guessed just ONE either. To add insult to injury, Erich is a music grad student…..And Elvis did not live exactly an uneventful life or died in his bed of old age either. What a blunder by Erich! This I will remember for a long time.

    • JP says:

I know I certainly do not remember (firsthand) anything that happened 50 years ago. Or even 30 years ago, as I was not born yet (although I can of course remember facts I’ve learned about what happened 50 or 30 years ago).

Do you really expect all contestants to know the exact year that Elvis died? Or even within a couple years? As I mentioned, I was able to come up with Elvis because the 70s sounded about right and his name came to mind, but I consider that to be luck.

That not to say it was a bad clue – I actually thought it was a very good, interesting clue. If I was in their situation, I would have probably wagered $0, as I know it is a weakness of mine.

  10. aaaa says:

Except that Aretha was the biggest musical loss of 2018. But the lights and other things take their toll on players on stage.

  11. JP says:

After doing the math, I was able to come up Elvis as a lucky guess. I couldn’t come up with Aretha though. I have never bought into the idol worship of celebrities, so news of a singer’s death typically goes in one ear and out the other.

There are also so many Kings, Queens, and Princes of so many music genres, that unless you were a big Aretha Franklin fan, it would be difficult to connect the dots in time, so I’m not surprised by the sole solve.

    • John B./I. says:

      @JP
I respectfully disagree. Especially with Erich being a music grad student.

      • VJ says:

Except you don’t even know what kind of music he is studying

        • John says:

Certain things you just know. You don’t have to be British to know who Elizabeth II is . Still somewhat ironic….

        • VJ says:

And what is that supposed to mean? Do you think he should “just know” rock and soul music regardless of what type of music he is actually studying?

As I recall it, in my teenage years, Aretha was no where as popular or well-known among the rock and pop music lovers as Elvis and I’m pretty sure that if I went out and asked 10 people in my own age group to name 5 songs by Aretha (excluding covers and gospel), maybe 3 of them would be able to do it right off the bat, if that

        • rhonda says:

Good thing you didn’t ask me, VJ, I can’t name 5 songs that she did right off the bat lol!
I don’t see why Erich should know when Elvis died because he is a music grad student. If you are a history grad student, should you know the date that Churchill died?

        • VJ says:

LOL, Rhonda, I’m sure you would get these two:

Respect (mostly everyone knows that but not everyone knows it’s a cover. Otis Redding did it first, and he wrote it)
Natural Woman (you mentioned it this morning)

          I would also get:
          Chain of Fools
          Think
          Since You’ve Been Gone
          The House that Jack Built

        • VJ says:

P.S. Rhonda, I just looked up Aretha on Secondhand Songs and it turns out that “The House that Jack Built” is a cover, too. The original (which I never heard until today) was by Thelma Jones.

My favorite by Aretha is “I Never Loved a Man” but I didn’t think of it right off the bat, even though I was just listening to it last week. Besides that, I always think the title is “I Ain’t Never Loved a Man”

        • rhonda says:

I would have only come up with the two, Respect and Natural Woman. I should have come up with “Think”, but that would have only been a total of 3 for me.

        • JJ says:

          Chain of Fools
          Natural Woman
          R-E-S-P-E-C-T
… and two from her “comeback-breakout party in the mid-80’s)
Freeway of Love (w/ a Clarence Clemons sax solo!)
          Who’s Zooming Who?
          That’s all I got…
(And Elizabeth II is who, again?!)

        • VJ says:

@JJ, I love that Freeway song but I wouldn’t offer it because I’d be afraid of botching the title 😀

        • JJ says:

@VJ – Both “Freeway of Love” & “Who’s Zoomin’ Who” are truly FUN songs! Aretha was on top of the world and the charts again w/ those little li’l ditties!

  12. Richard Corliss says:

    John Presloid is out.

    • John B./I. says:

He was already out. Now Alex Schmidt is gone.
You have the 2 tournament winners, Dhruv and the TT winner who will take Larry Martin’s spot.
      That’s 1 and 2.
      3.Josh,(7 games) 4.Ryan(7) 5. Kyle(7) 6.Rob(6) 7.Alan 8.Steven 9.Gilbert 10.Rachel (lowest 5 game winner),11.Eric 12. Anneke 13.Lindsey 14.Dave 15. and on the bubble now Jonathan.
11(Eric) to 15(Jonathan) are 4 game winners. Alex is already 16. as soon as we have the new TT winner and out, unless one (or more) player(s) ahead of him can’t make it to the ToC for whatever reason.

      • John says:

        @Richard
        PS
#7 Alan through #10 Rachel have 5 games, #6 Rob is the only 6 game winner on the list.If we get an at least 4 game winner with more than 93.301 winnings, then Jonathan would be gone, he’s on the “Schneid” right now, just hanging on.
        Time will tell.

        • Richard Corliss says:

Here’s the list of what it looks like now:
          1. Dhruv Gaur
          2. Josh Hill
          3. Ryan Fenster
          4. Kyle Jones
          5. Rob Worman
          6. Steven Grade
          7. Alan Dunn
          8. Gilbert Collins
          9. Rachel Lindgren
          10. Eric R. Backes
          11. Anneke Garcia
          12. Lindsey Shultz
          13. Dave Leffler
          14. Jonathan Dinerstein
          15. Alex Schmidt

    • John B./I. says:

      @Richard
You forgot to insert the new TT winner we will have in about 6 weeks at the #2 overall spot. You took Larry out and moved everybody up. That’s not how it works. Larry’s name will just be replaced by somebody else. So: # 2 will be the new TT winner you forgot about and that moves everybody a spot down. So that new TT winner will go between Dhruv and Josh, therefore Alex is O-U-T.
