Final Jeopardy: African Countries (7-5-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/5/2023) in the category “African Countries” was:

Nicknamed “the Kingdom in the Sky”, this landlocked nation is the only country in the world to lie entirely above 4,000 feet

New champ Kate Campolieta, a corporate communications specialist from Simsbury, CT, won $11,513 yesterday. In Game 2, she takes on these two players: Aubrey Gilleran, a high school English teacher from Charlotte, NC; and Anji Nyquist, a social media coordinator from Minneapolis, MN.

Round 1 Categories: Born on the 5th of July – All Shapes & Sizes – U.S. City of the Book – Opposites – Art & Artists – World of Food

Kate found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “U.S. City of the Book” under the $1,000 clue on the 12th pick of the round. She and Anji were tied in second place at $800 each, $200 less than Aubrey’s lead. She bet $201 and guessed Dallas. That was WRONG.

“Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”: Go south! show

Anji finished in the lead with $2,000. Kate was next with $1,799 and Aubrey was in third place with $200. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Nations’ Last Monarchs – Rhyming Phrases – Memoirs – Religion – Math Abbreviations & Symbols – Who Are “U”?

Aubrey found the first Daily Double in “Rhyming Phrases” under the $1,600 on the 16th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $8,200, $3,201 more than Kate in second place. Aubrey bet $1,400 but had no response so he was WRONG.

Meaning by any means necessary, this 5-word phrase ends with a shepherd’s tool show

Just two clues later, Kate landed on the last Daily Double in “Religion” under the $1,600 clue. She was in second place with $5,799, $1,001 less than Aubrey’s lead. Kate bet $1,101 and she was RIGHT.

In this religious group, “High Church”, such as the Oxford movement, is more like a Catholicism & “Low Church” is less so show

Aubrey finished in the lead with $11,200. Kate was second with $6,900 and Anji was last with $4,800. The $2,000 clue in Last Monarchs was not seen.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS LESOTHO?

From Renedian.com: “The landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho (pronounced le-soo-too) is entirely surrounded by South Africa. Because the entire nation sits more than 1,400’ above sea level, it’s known as the Kingdom in the Sky.” They have a nice collection of facts about the kingdom over there, such as it being one of the three remaining monarchies in Africa. (Morocco and Eswatini are the other two.) Official languages are Sesotho and English. The current monarch is Letsie III, who will be 60 years old on July 17, 2023.

Anji got it right. She bet $4,000 and finished with $8,800.

Kate went with Burundi. She bet and lost her whole $6,900.

Aubrey came up with Ethiopia. He lost $2,601 and finished with $8,599. That made a very surprised Anji Nyquist the new Jeopardy! champ

Final Jeopardy (7/5/2023) Kate Campolieta, Aubrey Gilleran, Anji Nyquist

A triple stumper from each round:

BORN ON THE 5TH OF JULY ($800) You don’t need one of his Oxford scholarships to know this diamond mogul was a July 5 baby

WHO ARE “U”? ($800) Bobby, Al & Al Jr. of this famous racing family have won the Indy 500 9 times among them

What happened to Mayim Bialek? I mean, she only hosted the Jeopardy game show for 7 weeks, and then it was back to Ken Jennings.

No, I didn’t get FJ, but that nation did turn up periodically in the Jeopardy game.

    • Rick says:

Hmmmm……….That may have not been wise for Mayim Bialik to walk off the Jeopardy set like that, and in sympathy with the Writers Guild of America strike. In fact, my guess is that she will be given the boot.

  2. William says:

I though Ken gave a dirty look when no one could answer the very easy math questions!

  3. Howard says:

Missed the show entirely, so relying on the recap.
Sneak Peek clues appear to have nothing to do with US Cities in books.
Wise wager by Anji to pull it out. I had no clue on FJ but would have guessed Lesotho.
Middle DD was easy–IF you know what a shepherd’s tool is.

My oh my, lots of stumpers. Knew the diamond mogul, the U racing family, Japanese fish, lottery racket, trig function, 3x2x1/3!, and the 2 components of blood pressure.

    • VJ says:

Howard, that was the Opposites category — we were having internet issues when the show was on so I put the Books category on the Early Spoiler, but I didn’t really want it because the Daily Double was in it. Besides that, switching to Opposites, I got 2 triple stumpers out of the way.

The title is fixed now. Thanks for mentioning it.

When was the last time Jeopardy had a player from Wyoming? I want names.
