Final Jeopardy: Antidisestablishmentarianism (4-1-21)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/1/2021) in the category “Antidisestablishmentarianism” was:
A real-life antidisestablishmentarian, William Bridgeman opposed the 1920 disestablishment of this in Wales
New champ Emily Seaman, a law clerk from Houston, TX, won $8,400 yesterday. In Game 2, her challengers are: KT Lowe, a librarian from Saint Clair Shores, MI; and Scott Shewfelt, a writer orig. from Tavistock, Ontario.
Round 1 Categories: April Fool! – U.S. Geography – Science & Scientists – TV & Film – Safe at Home – “Out” at First
Scott found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “U.S. Geography” under the $400 clue, with 7 clues worth $1,800 left after it. He was in third place with $1,000, $4,800 less than Emily’s lead. He bet it all and thought it was New Mexico. That was WRONG.
About 275 miles due west of the famous Four Corners, the Three Corners where Utah, Arizona & this state meet has its own monument. show
Emily finished in the lead with $7,200 but she gained $400 from a reversal (see below) so her score rose to $7,600. KT and Scott gained $800 each from the same reversal so KT finished second with $3,400 and Scott was last with $800. (Yes, before that happened, he had zero!) No clues went uncovered.
Round 2 Categories: 1971: 50 Years Ago – Broadway Musicals – Exploring Australia – Immoral Line – Currencies – Overlaps
Scott landed on the first Daily Double in “Exploring Australia” under the $1,600 clue on the 8th pick. He was in third place with $3,600 now, $5,200 less than Emily’s lead. He bet it all again and, this time, he was RIGHT and a serious contender.
This Dutchman charted the coast of North Australia in 1644 & got a sea & an island named for him. show
Scott got the last Daily Double in “Immoral Line” under the $800 clue, with 4 clues worth $2,800 left after it. In the lead with $13,600, he had $1,600 more than Emily in second place. He bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.
Of this title five-score-plus-one group, the villain says, “I don’t care how…hang them, suffocate them, drop them off the roof” show
Scott finished in the lead with $20,600. Emily was next with $12,000 and KT was in third place with $7,800. No clues went uncovered.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Dr. Oz just said “church” as the acceptable answer to the clue, although it is specifically referring to the Church of England in Wales, which was disestablished on March 31st, 1920. This was because of the creation of the Welsh Church Act in 1914 to “terminate the establishment” in order to separate church from state. It took 6 years to actually put in place though as it was put off until after World War I. Learn more about the history of disestablishing the Church of England in Wales from Church Times.
What did Viscount Bridgeman have to do with it? Apparently he was a conservative politician who opposed the Welsh Church Act. He was also an expert cricketer.
KT wrote down “The United Kingdom.” She lost her $7,000 bet and finished with $800.
Emily jokingly repeated her answer from yesterday and wrote down “Fed Ex.” That cost her $11,997 and left her with $3.00.
Scott ran out of time when writing something that began with “cru.” He lost $3,401 but won the game with the $17,199 he held on to. Scott Shewfelt is the new Jeopardy! champion.
Reversal: SAFE AT HOME ($400) redcross.org says hire a pro to make sure your home is securely anchored to its foundation for safety in one of these
Everyone’s response was rejected because they were lookin for “earthquake.” Evidently, the judges saw the light and KT and Scott were credited with $800. Emily got back $400, as her response of “flood” was marked wrong and deemed to have never happened. Dr. Oz said he was impressed “as a surgeon.” Whatever did he mean?
A triple stumper from each round:
BROADWAY MUSICALS ($2000) With music by Duncan Sheik, this coming-of-age musical is based on the German play “Fruhlings Erwachen”
IMMORAL LINE ($400) In “Paradise Lost”, not Santa but this guy says, “better to reign in hell, than serve in heav’n”

Note: on yesterday, April 1, 2021, the question about the first day of the Triduum in the Catholic Church is Thursday, Not Good Friday! One contestant said Thursday and was marked wrong. The Triduum begins on the evening of Thursday with a liturgy, and traditionally some people stay for a vigil until the church closes later in the night, unless the pandemic has changed that.
Dale, I believe you were watching a rerun of the 2-28-2020 game yesterday. If you reread the clue (the first Daily Double), you will see it says the first FULL day. That’s why Thursday was wrong.
Has FedEx ever been the RIGHT answer to Final Jeopardy?
Probably not, Harry. At least it hasn’t been in any of the many many games on J-Archive
Thanks!
(PS: Love your website)
Got my fifth Final Jeopardy! “skunk” of 2021. Since I learned to spell what was the longest word in most common-English dictionaries of the time as a third-grader, I also looked up the meaning. So, since that had been with me since I was eight-years old, I had no trouble interpreting the clue and determining the correct response as “What is the Anglican Church?” That response is equivalent in terminology to “What is the Church of England?” so it qualifies as a correct one.
An easy final, but this is the first time that I have seen such a long word category for final today. Did you anticipate that this was going to be used today VJ? Hope your health has improved so far.
No Lou, I haven’t thought about that word since I was a teenager when the old folks loved to pop out with words like that and challenge kids to spell them. ha ha ha (very funny — not)
One thing I don’t like very much is the skipping all over the board so I couldn’t help but notice that they played that Overlaps category all the way through today after Dr. Oz said the false teeth clue was clever.
Sorry but the final was not a tough one –
VJ,
Not to be a nit-picker, but the last DD question should be a smaller number (without my revealing the number to those who haven’t watched the show yet).
Thanks for the health update … always wishing you the best.
That’s fine, DC. I appreciate the heads up. I thought that looked weird and meant to it up but I fell asleep. lol (or maybe omg!)
Honestly, I think this fed ex joke is getting a bit stale here. It has been used once already before, but twice, it’s not needed. But congrats to Scott on his win today and at least that reversal helped everyone. This FJ category as a whole is not used very often, VJ. You do remember Ken using that FJ response right after his final game? Well, I feel in my opinion that Emily isn’t taking the game seriously here.
Tough final as we got another triple stumper.
