WHO IS ROGET?

In 2008, novelist Michael Upchurch wrote a review of “The Man Who Made Lists: Love, Death, Madness, and the Creation of Roget’s Thesaurus” by Joshua Kendall. The man who made lists was Peter Mark Roget. Kendall believed that Roget’s emotionally unstable mother was the reason behind Roget’s need to organize and categorize things, which he channeled into creating lists of words. At age 26, Roget “compiled the first draft of his famous thesaurus in 1805” but put it aside until the late 1840s. He published the first edition of “Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases” in 1852 and continued to expand on it until he died at age 90.

Peter Mark Roget’s name is indeed synonymous with thesaurus. He is also credited with giving the meaning “collection of words arranged according to sense” to the word. However, Upchurch’s article says Roget also “worked as a physician, published a two-volume work on animal and vegetable physiology, contributed 300,000 words to the Encyclopedia Britannica and was involved with the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, promoting self-education for the working class.”

Maya got it right. Her “Rogett” spelling was accepted. She bet it all and doubled her score to $15,600.

Tim went with Webster. That cost him $6,801 and left him with $1,999.

Caleb wrote down Smith. He lost $8,019 and finished with $1,563. So Maya Wright won the match and she will join Jackson Jones and Justin Bolsen in the 2-day finals.

I got Final right, although I think they gave him too much precedence. I only knew it because, over 30 years ago, that’s what I got for my second spelling bee win. For many years, I’ve just gone to the .com when I need a thesaurus.

Overall, I’m ready for this tourney to be done. I, myself, liked better when there are wild cards. That adds more strategy.

    • VJ says:

Ditto on the Wild Cards, not to mention that this format drags the tournament out too long!

  2. Anne BA says:

That first Mermaids answer should be Starbucks, not StarKist.

    • Rick says:

Actually, one of the contestants did say ‘Starbucks’ (although I came up with ‘Star Kist myself).

    • VJ says:

Thanks, Anne , I fixed that. Wow, it’s almost funny that I screwed that up– I have a Starbucks Doubleshot every morning and it’s really Chicken of the Sea that has the mermaid that I saw in my mind.

  3. Howard says:

Thought all would get the final; wasn’t anything like yesterday’s.

  4. Rick says:

Hmmmm…..All I could come up in FJ was Dewey, but I knew that was dead on arrival. Actually, none of my family got it right.

  5. Esme St. Claire says:

Um, I think the second anagram response is WRONG.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

The all gender streak is finally over. But I hope Caleb will forgive Maya from the rematch.
