WHAT IS GUAM?

The Chamorro people, or Chamoru people, are the indigenous people of the Mariana Islands, which include the United States territories of Guam and the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) in Micronesia. The CIA World Factbook’s estimated population for CNMI in 2022 is 51,475 and 23.9% of that are Chamorro. Guam is the largest island of the Marianas and the World Factbook estimates the population of Guam for 2022 at 169,086, 37.3% of which are Chamorro.

According to Guampedia, in 2020, 58,240 individuals had migrated and were living in the USA. They say: “While the population is increasing in all areas, the proportion of the Chamorro population on the islands is decreasing rapidly.” By now, there may be more Chamorro living in the States than on Guam, but Guam is still the U.S. territory with the largest Chamorro population.

Autumn went with the U.S. Virgin Islands. She lost her $200 bet and finished with $4,200.

Stephanie got it right. She added $8,401, bringing her score up to $22,801.

Sreekar thought it was America Samoa. He lost $3,001 and finished with $22,799. That made Stephanie Pierson the winner of this match and the third semi-finalist.

Heck of a comeback for Stephanie, who barely averted a runaway. Sreekar looked very distraught after he lost. I did some quick mental geography and came up with Guam. Never considered Samoa,
but that seemed like a legit guess.

    • Rick says:

Yes,, in retrospect, Guam would have certainly been the logical choice due to its proximity to the far east.

  2. Rick says:

Hmmmm……….I picked the U.S. Virgin Islands too in FJ, and was surprised to learn that the correct response was Guam. Actually, Guam would have been one of my last choices since that island was typically associated with U.S. military bases.
