WHAT IS “THE LAST SUPPER”?

leonardodavinci.net has one of those “facts you might not know lists.” No. #9 is “The painting has been a victim of neglect and abuse. In 1652, monastery residents cut a new door in the wall of the deteriorating painting, which removed a chunk of the artwork showing the feet of Jesus. Late in the 18th century, Napoleon Bonaparte’s soldiers turned the area into a stable and further damaged the wall with projectiles. During World War II, the Nazis bombed the monastery, reducing surrounding walls to rubble.” No. 10 addresses specific dates of restoration and No. 6 notes: “Critics maintain that only a fraction of the painting that exists today is the work of Leonardo da Vinci.”

From 2014: PAINTERS ($1600) Leonardo da Vinci painted this fresco in the church of the Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan

Kristin bet $8,500, bringing her up to $20,500.

Hope bet it all, doubling her score to $31,600.

Dana bet $15,401 and won the game the same way she did yesterday, by $1.00. Only this time, it was a much bigger payday: $31,601. Great to see that… Go Dana!

Final Jeopardy (3/7/2019) Dana Wayne, Kristin Philips, Hope Shinn

Reversal READING TALK ($400) I get it, I hear you, “I read you” these 2 ways – Kristin’s rejected answer 5 x 5 provided a funny moment when she gave it without buzzing in. Alex told her she had to do that. She did and he said “No.” They wanted “loud and clear” but the judges decided to accept 5 x 5 which means the same thing

    I don’t get why 5×5 fit the book category

    • VJ says:

      @Joel, I didn’t get that either but I guess since they had nothing in the clue itself to exclude that possible response, they had to allow it

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
        It’s military/aviation/navy jargon. I explained it to Joel.
        “How do you READ (understand) me?” ” 5×5″ =loud and clear/excellent.

      • Joel says:

        Do you remember what the real answer was

        • VJ says:

          Joel – all that is in the recap under the results image — the category, the clue, the response they wanted and the response that was rejected, then accepted (and there is a link to another site that will show you that 5×5 means loud and clear

    • John B./I. says:

      @Joel
      5×5 is mentioned in the aviation and navy manual. It’s a code like a police code 10-20, (location), sort of a handbook with codes and transmissions. It’s more a manual but I guess it qualifies as a book…

    • John B./I. says:

      @Joel
      And the category was “Reading Talk”, not books. When you receive a transmission you are asked “How do you read me?” and you answer “5×5” instead of loud and clear. That’s the best reception. If it’s somewhat garbled you’d say “4×4″ or 3×3”, the lower the #, the worse the reception.

      • Joel says:

        Really helpful. Now I forget, what was the actual question she responded to

        • John B./I. says:

          @Joel
          I get it, I hear you, “I read you” these two ways. Since “read” was in the clue I guess it qualified for “books”. 5×5= 2 ways = the first 5 is signal strength, the second 5 is readability or how you receive it. All clear?

  2. Lou says:

    Congrats to Dana on her third win. And also I am happy that the ladies got final right. Also I was wondering if there were protests going on regarding Jesus’s foot in The Last Supper John and VJ? Did some oppose Da Vinci’s work?

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou, No, not that I know of. The work was commissioned by the then Duke of Milan. Don’t forget, at da Vinci’s time the church ruled supreme in Catholic countries, especially Italy.

      • Lou says:

        Of course, thank you my friends. Much appreciated with the helpful information. I really hope that we don’t get anymore four game curses because we need some five time winners before the season ends.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      Well, I watched The Da Vinci code and one of those paintings is the FJ! answer. Now, come to think of it, that film became a center of controversy, and so is this painting. @Lou, @John, @VJ, care to explain why?

    • VJ says:

      @Lou, there’s a preview of the book “Leonardo da Vinci” by Walter Isaacson on Google Books. On Page 291, it says: “By 1652 the painting was so faint and dissipated that the monks felt comfortable breaking a doorway through the wall at the bottom, cutting off the feet of Jesus, which were probably crossed in a manner prefiguring the crucifixion.” In the paragraph after that, it says that there was an effort at restoration in the latter part of the 1700s that met with public protests.

  3. John B./I. says:

    Well, what can I say other that I’m pleasantly surprised. Congratulations to all 3 players for getting it and especially to Dana for win #3. Now, if she wins tomorrow, then she is another player winning #4 on Friday and going for the elusive #5 on Monday…..
    Proof how you can read people wrong: after her first game I thought she wouldn’t last. So I owe her an apology and it’s proof how you can misread people.
    By the way: in aviation, military, navy(recreational) etc 5×5 ist the STANDARD answer !!!
