Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/4/2021) in the category “U.S. Military Equipment” was:

The U.S. Army’s tradition of naming these began with the Sioux, used in the Korean War

New champ Melis Sahin-Collins, a data analyst from Redondo Beach, CA, won $2,000 yesterday. In Game 2, her challengers are: Jim Cooper, a screenwriter from Pacific Palisades, CA; and Chauncey Lo, a student from Los Altos, CA.

Chauncey got the last Daily Double in “In Latin, Please” under the $1,200 clue, with 4 clues worth $5,600 left after it. In second place with $10,400, he had $3,600 less than Jim’s lead when he found it. Jim lost $3,200 at this point on a reversal (see below). That dropped Jim down to $10,800 so Chauncey was only $400 behind him. Chauncey bet $3,000 and came up with “ego” but that was WRONG.

Jim finished in the lead with $11,600. Chauncey was next with $8,600 and Melis was in third place with $7,000. We didn”t get to see the $2,000 clue in Bible Babes.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE HELICOPTERS?

The U.S. Dept. of Defense has an article detailing how army helicopters got Native American names, giving credit to General Hamilton Howze for starting the tradition: “Howze said since the choppers were fast and agile, they would attack enemy flanks and fade away, similar to the way the tribes on the Great Plains fought during the aforementioned American Indian Wars. He decided the next helicopter produced — the well-known H-13 of “M.A.S.H.” fame — would be called the Sioux in honor of the Native Americans who fought Army soldiers in the Sioux Wars and defeated the 7th Calvary Regiment at the Battle of Little Bighorn.”

In 1969,l AR-70-28 was enacted and “Army aircraft were specifically categorized as requiring ‘Indian terms and names of American Indian tribes and chiefs.’ Names to choose from were provided by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.” The regulation was eventually rescinded but the tradition continues to this day.

Melis thought it was a missile. She only lost $900, leaving her with $6,100.

Chauncey got it right. He bet $700 and finished with $9,300.

Jim got it right, too. He bet $5,700 and won the game with $17,300. Jim Cooper is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (3/4/2021) Melis Sahin-Collins, Jim Cooper, Chauncey Lo

Reversal: HIT: THE “ROAD” ($1600) Willie Nelson says he “just can’t wait to get” here, “making’ music with my friends” – Jim added an extra word, “Back”, at the beginning of the title. That’s such a famous song, you had to know that response was going to be reversed!

A triple stumper from each round:

Can someone explain to me The Crown clue?
George VI gave up the ghost & the crown? What is the ghost? And George VI did not give up the crown, his brother did.

    • VJ says:

Hi Yosef, when people say someone “gave up the ghost”, it means that person died. Ordinarily, English monarchs give up the crown at the same time they give up the ghost.

Despite that reversal in the willie nelson song not doing it for Jim, he might still win a few more games with the knowledge that he has. Decent scores by the opponents. I feel that Melis was a bit nervous after yesterday’s game and that might have been her undoing in today’s game.
