Final Jeopardy: Musical Theater (3-28-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/28/2018) in the category “Musical Theater” was:

This show has songs that weren’t in the 1992 film it’s based on, like “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” & “How Will I Know”

New champ Robert Dimitri, won $23,601 yesterday. In his second game, his opponents are: Emily Milan, from Birmingham, MI; and Joey DiNardi, from Newington, CT.

Round 1 Categories: Clues Across New York City – Entertaining Inspirations – Potpourr-knee – Yesterday’s News – Relationships Are Hard – Go See “Al”

We didn’t get to play the Daily Double in this round. Out of the 4 clues left on the board, it was likely under the $1,000 clue in “Potpourr-knee.” The others were a $200 clue and two $400 clues.

Joey finished in the lead with $2,800. Dimitri was second with $2,600 and Emily was last with $1,800. Before the next round began, Joey benefited to the tune of $400 from a reversal (see below). His score rose to $3,200.

Round 2 Categories: Pipe Show – Mysterious Words – Alfred Nobel, This Is Your Life – Leagues – Songs for Your Cat – Novels About Jesus

Joey found the first Daily Double in “Leagues” under the $1,600 clue on the 13th pick. He was in the lead with $5,600 at this point, $1,000 more than Emily and Dimitri, tied in second place. He bet $5,000 and guessed Australia. That was WRONG.

Joey found the last Daily Double in “Pipe Show” under the $2,000 clue, with 5 clues left after it. In second place with $5,000, he had $1,200 less than Emily in second place. He bet $1,300 and he was RIGHT.

Joey finished in the lead with $7,900. Emily was next with $6,600 and Dimitri was in third place with $5,800.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE BODYGUARD”?

The 1992 film, starring Whitney Houston (as Rachel Marron) and Kevin Costner (as Frank Farmer), featured 5 Whitney Houston hit songs: “I Will Always Love You”, “I’m Every Woman,” “I Have Nothing,” “Run to You” and “Queen of the Night.” The 2012 musical based on the film has those 5, the 2 mentioned in the clue and these other Houston hits: “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “Saving All My Love for You, “So Emotional” and “One Moment in Time.” See the trailer for The Bodyguard US tour with Deborah Cox as Rachel Marron. Also see Deborah Cox on Wendy Williams in 2016. She knew Whitney Houston personally when they were labelmates at Arista Records.

Sporcle challenge: See how many songs you remember from films of the ’90s. Watch out for the boobytraps– some of the films are just there to confuse you!

Dimitri bet $3,200. He finished with $9,000.

Emily bet $5,001, bringing her up to $11,601.

Joey didn’t bet anything so his $7,900 landed him in third place and that made Emily Milan the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (3/28/2018) Robert Dimitri, Joey DiNardo, Emily Milan

Reversal: POTPOURR-KNEE ($200) Recipients kneel on a special footstool before Queen Elizabeth to be dubbed a dame or this male equivalent – Joey said “sir” and Dimitri picked it up with “knight.” Joey got $400 when the judges did an about-face.

A triple stumper from each round:

GO SEE “AL” ($1000) High-level programming language used for teaching

NOVELS ABOUT JESUS ($2000) This title item of Jesus’ clothing is won by a Roman soldier in a dice game in a Lloyd Douglas novel

The Bodyguard musical is playing in SW FL this week through Sunday, but hasn’t yet played Broadway.

Joey was smart – but seemed very anxious and uncomfortable. Alex T. is starting to get on my nerves due to his “grandstanding” — just ask the questions. I suspect he has gotten to big for his britches.

Emily has guts – I look forward to her next contest where she may be less timid in front of the camera.

@Cece, yeah, I know what you mean. I wonder if the show knows just how much these video categories irk viewers or maybe they are sitting back there thinking “wow, the audience is gonna love this!” 😀

btw, I also wondered if any of the players had ever even heard of Father Divine on that Johnny Mercer clue. I had a babysitter when I was 8 that was a member of his movement and she took me to one of their banquets. Holy moly, holy roller! (They called them holy rollers). They had a lot of food!! Check this out: Mother Divine died last year and this guy got her FBI record through the FOIA.

I think the show believes the videos are entertaining, and I guess they are to some people.

I personally, have never heard of Father Divine, Mother Divine, or the Divine family. I’ll check the article out tomorrow.

As smart as these contestants are, some of their betting strategies are pretty dumb. Wow… talk about giving the game away!

    • timmeh says:

I would rather lose by taking my shot at winning and getting it wrong than not betting anything and hoping BOTH my opponents get it wrong

      • Albert says:

You are soooooooooo right! If I ever get my shot I will try my best to show courage on DDs and FJs, especially FJs.

Joey was extremely impressive to come back after the big DD loss. The more I watch the show I realize that ’emotional intelligence’ is sometimes more important than a person’s IQ and level of knowledge.

Second time with a leader not betting more than expected. Was there a,betting strategy going haywire over this week and the week before with a string of leader curses and low chances of contenders tournament of champions material, VJ? Why are we seeing contestants so timid and nervous on betting big, are.they worried about winning big and losing on.purpose the next day?

I thought Robert was going to bet a little more than expected. Anyway, I loved Whitney Houston but sadly the drugs took her away, you have kids that still listen to her songs on radio, VJ?

    • VJ says:

Yes,, that was certainly sad to see, especially after Joey fought his way back from that $5K loss. It was also sad not to see the first round Daily Double. Boo hoo hoo!

      • Cece says:

” It was also sad not to see the first round Daily Double. Boo hoo hoo!”—yeah, blame it on those long-arse video clues.

        • VJ says:

Well, no, Cece I don’t think so — when they were going through the Potpourr-knee category, after the $800 “member of the spirit army” cue, there were 11 clues left. Dimitri decided to skip the $1000 clue there and go up to the $200 clue in “Yesterday’s News.”

Joey got that and went straight for the $800 clue same category so it seemed like he was looking for the DD, but he got it right and went to the $600 clue.

Emily got that and Alex gave the “less than a minute” warning. She went to the $1,000 News clue. That was a triple stumper. Then they went through the $600, $800 & $1000 clues in Relationships, the last being another triple stumper and that was that. So I think they could have finished all the $1K clues. (Of course, it’s rare but not unheard for the DD to be under a $400 clue so I could be all wet, too).

Alex wasted extra time with his long thank you on the video clues but there were a lot of triple stumpers, incl. all of the $1000 clues that were uncovered!

        • Cece says:

Thanks for the breakdown, VJ, and I totally get what you’re saying. The point I was trying to make was, w/out those long-arse video clues there’s less chance of a LTAM warning with still 8 clues left on the board. Of course, this also happens w/out the long clues sometimes, but these videos just increase the chances. Yes, they’re my J pet peeve (Plus Whitman). 🙂

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, it’s the second day in a row where the leader – despite getting FJ right – threw away the game by an incomprehensible wager.
Congratulations Jlane for the only right prediction !!! and to Emily. I guess she can look at it as an early (very early since the show was taped awhile ago) Easter gift… Must have been not too hot a game anyway, total money combined before FJ 20.300…..
But what are the chances for such blunder like this to happen 2 days in a row?? Only possible reason maybe that “Musical Theater” sounds more intimidating than “1960s No 1 hits”.
