TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MECCA?

One of the Five Pillars of Islam, the Hajj is a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia that must be made by all Muslims who are physically and financially able to do so at least once in their lives. It takes place annually during the month of Dhu al-Hijjah when millions of Muslims travel to the birthplace of the prophet Muhammad. The Transportation section of this wikipedia article on Hajj will give you an idea of the history of traveling to Mecca, as well as the lowdown on the one-week service (Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro line) the clue refers to. It doesn’t yet include any info about the Haramain high-speed railway that was opened up last year.

From 1988: HAJEPODGE ($100) Once a believer has made a pilgrimage to this city, he may add the title “Hajji” to his name

Ryan wrote down the correct reponses to the DD’s he missed, much to Alex Trebek’s amusement. He didn’t bet anything so he stayed at $400.

Mara got it right. She bet $3,499 bringing her up to $7,799.

Dave got it, too. He added $4,600 to his score, wining the game with $18,600. That gave him a 2-day total of $23,200.

How anyone could be smart enough to be on Jeopardy! and not know it was LBJ who won in 1964 (Dems always win DC), is really a head-scratcher.

  2. John Christian Ambion says:

Whoa. Ryan’s costly DD made Dave’s game into a runaway. @William said that in April, there will be another great J! champion. Is this misleading, or is it authentic? You’ll be the judge.

    • William Weyser says:

No, really. I saw that commercial, and it did say that there will another great JEOPARDY! champion in April. We’ll just have to wait and see who it is, and what happens in April.

  3. William Weyser says:

A few minutes ago, I saw a commercial saying that this April, we will have our next great JEOPARDY! Champion. Who will it be? We’ll find out then.

    • John says:

      @william
Maybe Dave might even start a streak in March…????

      • William Weyser says:

He might. If Dave finds all Daily Doubles, bets big enough on them, and gets them all right, same with Final Jeopardy!, he can be tomorrow’s hero.

  4. VJ says:

Obviously, Ryan has a good sense of humor about his DD misses today and Alex Trebek seemed pleased that he took it that way.

I’m in no position to say anything about any misreadings in this game, since I was have my own troubled parsing clues today (and not just the FJ)

Congrats to Dave. I’m glad this game made up for Friday for him.

  5. John says:

CONGRATULATIONS to Dave for #2!!! He seemed a lot stronger today than Friday, still a lot of TSs I guess, judging by the scores of 18.700 total…But maybe HE will get on a roll? Let’s hope so.

In 1964 JFK was already dead. This was a MAJOR blunder for Ryan. This should not be a generation thing imo.

  6. Lou says:

Well at least two got final jeopardy right today but Ryan made risky bets that didn’t pay off for him. And I thought Dave had strong opponents today. Ryan’s performance was a disappointment after missing both daily doubles.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

That’s a funny Final Jeopardy! response but it has nothing to do with today’s Final Jeopardy!.
