WHAT IS CAPET?

King Louis XVI of France was forced to assume the name Citoyen (Citizen) Louis Capet by the National Convention after France was declared a republic in September 1792. The now former king was put on trial in December 1792, convicted of high treason and sentenced to death. He died on the guillotine on January 21, 1793. The former queen, now Antoinette Capet, was also called the Veuve (Widow) Capet. In October 1793, Marie Antoinette met the same fate as her husband.

The Capetian dynasty was founded in 987 by Hugh Capet, a descendant of Charlemagne. His direct descendants ruled France until 1328, and were succeeded by indirect descendants from the House of Valois and the House of Bourbon. Perhaps the National Convention chose to go all the way back to the surname Capet because a Bourbon was sitting on the throne of Spain.

Neilesh thought it was Valois. He bet and lost his whole $11,400.

Adriana went with Merovingian. That cost her $6,000 and left her with $5,400.

Isaac came up with Bourbon. He lost $9,001 and finished with $4,799. So the first win goes to Adriana.

FINISH LINE: Adriana 1 Isaac 0 Neilesh 0

I didn’t remember the king’s trial but Marie Antoinette as “the widow Capet” was stuck in my brain from long-past lessons in various History classes. Again, thanks VJ for all the useful bits of information you give. They have made me a better Jeopardy player and a smarter human. You ROCK!

I thought Adriana would get the final clue for sure. She got the clue on the Schönbrunn Palace being the summer home of the Habsburgs and Marie Antoinette was born an Archduchess of that dynasty.

    Sigh 😒
