Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/5/2020) in the category “American History” was:

At Harpers Ferry, John Brown & his rebels were defeated by troops commanded by this man who 2 years later led a rebel army himself

2x champ Travis Gaylord, a management consultant from Wynnewood, PA, has won $20,002 so far. In Game 3, he takes on these two players: Paige Hermansen, an English professor from Amherst, MA; and Justin Joseph, a voice over artist from Los Angeles, CA.

Round 1 Categories: World Leaders – Newspapers & Magazines – State Songs – Nicknames – Texting Abbrev. – Movies Across America

Travis found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “World Leaders” under the $400 clue on the 17th pick of the round. He was in third place with $1,200, $1,400 less than Paige’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

In 2003 it all came crashing down around him, including his statue on April 9. show

Travis finished in the lead with $4,600. Paige was second with $3,800 and Justin was last with $3,600.

Round 2 Categories: A Colorful Category – On the Mediterranean – Show Tune Rhymes – The “Ide”s of February – Genetic Disorders – Authors’ Name Changes

Justin found the first Daily Double in “A Colorful Category” under the $2,000 clue on the 5th pick. He was in second place with $5,600 now, $1,000 behind Travis in the lead. He bet $3,000 and thought it was the Smoky Mountains. That was WRONG.

Here’s this mountain range mentioned in the opening of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” (video of the song w/scenery) show

Justin found the last Daily Double in “Show Tune Rhymes” under the $2,000 clue on the 14th pick. In second place with $7,400, he was only $400 behind Travis’ lead now. He bet $3,000 again and tried “the fridge.” So very funny but WRONG.

Travis finished in the lead with $11,000. Paige was next with $8,600 and Justin was in third place with $6,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ROBERT E. LEE?

From History.com’s account of John Brown’s raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory and Arsenal: “On the night of October 16, 1859, Brown and his band overran the arsenal…. Word of the raid spread, and by morning Brown and his men were surrounded. A company of U.S. marines arrived on October 17, led by Colonel Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant J. E. B. Stuart. On the morning of October 19, the soldiers overran Brown and his followers. Ten of his men were killed, including two of his sons.”

The account on PBS.org recalls Frederick Douglass’ warning to John Brown upon learning of Brown’s Harpers Ferry plans: “You’re walking into a perfect steel-trap,” he said to Brown, “and you will never get out alive.”

Justin was going for Hamilton but that somehow came out “Hamit.” He lost everything but a buck.

Paige got it right. She bet $6,400, bringing her up to $15,000.

Travis got it, too. He bet $6,201 and won the game with $17,201. His 3-day total is $37,203.

@Rhonda, on that YBS clue, some other pages list other meanings for that and one of them is “yucky bunny stuff” huh??? lol

I also saw “you’ve been schooled” somewhere

  2. VJ says:

Justin’s answer to the DD in the Show Tune Rhymes wasn’t the only funny one in that category. For the $400 clue

In “The Music Man” there were “copper bottom tympani in horse platoons… double bell euphoniums & big” these instruments

    Travis answered “spitoon” 🤣🤣

    The song is “76 Trombones”

I remember hearing country roads take me home on the jukebox at local stores. But still how did Justin not remember about Little Orphan Annie, VJ? I mean that rhyme isn’t that hard to forget. And as for smoky mountains yes my family and I took a trip there one time down in Tennessee but this is west Virginia we are talking about here. But I am glad that the scores have improved today and congrats to travis on his win. If the event of bleeding kansas came to Justin’s mind, he would not have missed FJ, right?
