WHAT IS AVON?

From Reference for Business: “Avon founder David McConnell was born on July 18, 1858, near Oswego, New York…. He went to work as a door-to-door book salesman with Union Publishing Company. To entice female customers to buy his books, he gave them a small vial of rose-scented perfume. When he discovered that many women were buying books just to get the perfume, McConnell decided to launch his own perfume company.” McConnell chose to use a door-to-door sales force, believing the best representatives for his newly formed “California Perfume Company” would be women. David McConnell Jr. became the second president of the company after his father’s death in 1937. In 1939, he changed the company’s name to Avon Products as an homage to his father, who was a great fan of William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon.

An old clue from 1987: CORPORATE AMERICA ($100) Selling “Little Dot” perfume door-to-door in 1886, Mrs. Albee is considered the 1st of these saleswomen (Note: Statuettes of Mrs. Albee are awarded to top Avon ladies annually)

Andrew got it right. He bet $5,000 and finished with $19,500.

Aaron got it, too. He bet $11,827 and that brought him up to $29,227.

Ken wrote down “MAC” with a sad face. 😞 He lost his $16,301 bet, landing in third place with $2,199. So Aaron Craig remained the champ. His 2-day total is $51,254.

I feel so sorry for Ken. Aaron seems to be a smug, annoying person but the person he beat yesterday seemed even more annoying. So I lived through that. But today, a strong player like Ken losing, is too much. Hope Aaron loses tomorrow.

Sometimes I wonder what makes a viewer take a dislike to a game show contestant. I mean, does the person have a mannerism that reminds the viewer of someone they disliked in real life? In any event, I didn’t see anything smug about Sam and I don’t see anything smug about Aaron so they must not have pushed my “smug” button lol.

Personally, I prefer players who are obviously delighted that they won the game, as opposed to the ones who act like they got FJ wrong when they got it right,.

MAC Cosmetics was not a bad guess by Ken. He may have been focusing on the first part of the clue rather than the later part. Living in a household where adult female daughters visit us periodically over recent years before the pandemic I’ve seen MAC Cosmetics in their possession but can’t recall seeing any products with Avon names. I can see him being more familiar with a recent popular cosmetics company. Poor Ken should have focused on the second part of the clue.

  3. Larry says:

Wasn’t the question turbulence wrong in the T-N-T category? I listened twice and it didn’t sound like turbulent to me. Maybe my hearing is going.

    • VJ says:

I definitely heard “turbulent”, Larry. (just listened to it with my eyes closed)..

This was the clue: ($200) Adjective for air that moves suddenly & violently

It’s funny to see Ken wanting to switch categories even after he found the daily double. That was the best moment of the show. But still though congrats to Aaron on his second win. He needs that third win to stay in the lead. VJ do you also remember that threesome response from Kara spak previously? There should be more great moments like this.
