WHAT IS “TAPS”?
On TapsBugler.com, Taps historian and professional bugler, Jari Villanueva writes: “Taps began as a revision for the signal of Extinguish Lights (Lights Out) at the end of the day. Up until the Civil War, the infantry call for Extinguish Lights was printed in Silas Casey’s (1801-1882) Infantry Tactics and other manuals, the music which had been borrowed from the French. The music for Taps was adapted by Union General Daniel Butterfield for his brigade (Third Brigade, First Division, Fifth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac) in July, 1862.” In another article on the lyrics to Taps, he says that the U.S. Army still continued to refer to the bugle call as “Extinguish Lights and did not officially change the name to Taps until 1891.” Mr. Villanueva includes the first lyrics for Taps as well as these (which I learned in 5th grade music class, along with other Civil War songs like “Goober Peas”):

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hill, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.”

Natalie got it right. She bet $3,201 and finished with $8,401.

David got it, too. He added $2,001 to finish with $10,401.

Sam wrote down “Love. Baby don’t hurt me no more”, lyrics from “What is Love”, a Haddaway hit song. He lost his $100 bet and won the game with $17,100. Sam’s 2-day total is $50,301.

I live in the Palm Springs area and we saw an old episode tonight 2/22/21 with Alex Trebeck. What the heck!!

  2. Howard says:

Unbelievable. David chose not to protect his $3200 lead, and handed Sam a runaway victory.
Obviously he thought it was worth $10000 to find an animal’s name inside another word.
Even with a right answer, he would not have had his own runaway.
The final was a cinch, and David’s foolhardy DD wager cost him a bunch of $$ and a return visit.

There are tens of thousands of people who would be great Jeopardy hosts. Why not chooses a person from the Clue Crew? Is the Clue Crew a dead end job?

Mike Richards game show hosting experience paid off tonight. No note cards when interviewing contestants. Quite at ease and stood up throughout the show. Exemplified a man on the move. I can see why Sony hired him away from being the producer of the Price is Right (another favorite game show for me to watch when I want to laugh) to produce Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. When I see his name at the end of both shows I had to google his name to see if it was the same person and it was. Sharp guy! Not sure he was fond of the champ’s fj written response. Although we may never know.

  5. DC says:

It was a curious FJ response from Sam. Since he started writing quickly (and he wrote a lot) it would seem that he intended right along to go for a “joke” response. If he was legitimately giving his best effort why not wait to see if you suddenly “get it”? But then again, why wager anything at all if you intend to try humor rather than being correct?
    Curiouser and curiouser.

  6. Lou says:

Despite a risky 10K bet by David on that daily double, he actually came through in final jeopardy. Congrats to him and Natalie. But that funny response by Sam definitely got a good laugh out of me and you VJ. What is love is a song to be remembered for life. Also VJ have you watched Chicago Med or ER?

    • VJ says:

I didn’t think Sam’s response was funny, Lou. My college-age granddaughter watched the show with me and before the FJ answers were revealed, I was telling her that everyone would get FJ unless David went with a wrong response to save face. I said that’s what I would do because people would then conclude that I would have lost anyway. So I was very surprised when it was Sam who went for the throwaway response.

I know he said he had no idea what the right response was. I told my granddaughter maybe it’s true but I find it hard to believe. She said he started writing right away so he didn’t even try to figure it out. But yikes — he had to know that would only make Dave feel worse.
