WHAT IS NEVERLAND?

In Chapter 3, (“Come Away, Come Away!”), of J.M. Barrie’s “Peter and Wendy” (1911), Peter Pan tells Wendy Darling that he wants “always to be a little boy” so he ran away to Kensington Gardens where he lived “a long long time among the fairies.” Later, she asks where he lives now. “With the lost boys,” he says and explains: “They are the children who fall out of their perambulators when the nurse is looking the other way. If they are not claimed in seven days they are sent far away to the Neverland to defray expenses. I’m captain.”

Gianna got it right with Never Never Land, as Trebek assumed because she wrote it down “rather quickly.” After the reveal, he said “and once again, I am right, as you were.” LOL!! Gianna added $100 to finish with $4,100.

Rob had the same response as Gianna. He bet a healthy $15,000, bringing him up to $32,800.

Vinay thought they went to the infirmary. (He also thanked Kristi for taking his shift so he could be on the show.) Vinay lost $5,300 and landed in second place with $14,400. Rob Worman remains champ again, with a 3-day total of $54,299. That sure made up for yesterday!

But why were their answers of “Never Never Land” deemed CORRECT when your direct quotation from J.M.Barrie’s “Peter Pan” shows clearly that the Fictional Place was “Neverland”? I am distressed that Disney trumped J.M. Barrie.

    • VJ says:

@Alexandra. I don’t think we can say that “Never Never Land” came from the Disney version. There’s an illustration by F.D. Bedford in the 1911 book captioned “The Never Never Land” for one thing.

I was just quoting from the 1911 book because it matched the clue. In Barrie’s earlier 1904 play, the quote says “prams,” not perambulators. Various sources say that Never Never Land comes from the play.

Gianna couldn’t get rolling, the gentleman seem to be a lot faster on that button today.

Congrats to Rob once again. Neverland reminded me of the disney version.Of Peter pan, VJ. I am glad Rob had a big bet payoff and I hope he wins his fourth game next week. Plus this reminded me of Tim kutz and his four game run last February in the second week. Plus VJ, did your kids get into disney Peter pan?

  4. VJ says:

I got such a kick out of Alex and his “prediction” that Gianna had the right answer and then saying he was right. Hey, my 2/3 prediction was right today, too! It was also funny that Alex added an extra syllable to infirmary.

Congrats to Rob on the big bet. He would have won even if Vinay got it right!!

Rob’s big bet worked out. But it was not a smart bet. He should have remembered how he won yesterday when Shawn made an unwise wager when she was in second place and it was a ts.
