WHO IS FREDERICK DOUGLASS?

Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) was an American historian, author and journalist, aka the “Father of Black History.” In 1915, he co-founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Dr. Carter worked to dispel the prevalent notion that African-Americans contributed nothing of value to history by documenting African-American accomplishments in the USA.

On the 10th anniversary of the ASALH in 1925, Dr. Woodson began promoting “Negro History Week” to advance his goal of stamping out racism. The second week in February was considered ideal, containing the birthdays of the two greatest 19th century leaders in the fight to end slavery, one white and one black: Abraham Lincoln (born 2/12/1809) and Frederick Douglass (adopted birthday 2/14/1818). Negro History Week was the precursor to Black History Month.
