Final Jeopardy: Legends (12-9-25)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/9/2025) in the category “Legends” was:

Legend says that for military aid, Robert Bruce gave half of a symbol of Scotland’s monarchy to the King of Munster, who turned it into this

New champ Will Riley, an engineer orig. from Houston, TX, won $16,801 yesterday. In Game 2, his challengers are: Steve Riddell, a business manager from Euless, TX; and Jenna LaFleur, a freelancer from Washington, D.C.

Round 1 Categories: Historic Leaders – Lit-pourri – That’s Probably Illegal – Mild TV Spoilers – K2 – Yas Queens

Jenna found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “That’s Probably Illegal” under the $600 clue on the 18th pick of the round. She was in second place with $2,400 now, $1,600 less than Will’s lead. Jenna made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

This crime refers to illegally transporting booze or taping & sell that Doobie Brothers concert show

Jenna finished in the lead with $7,600 and Will was second with $5,400. A reversal (see below) before the next round began bumped Steve’s score up to $4,400. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Islands – Russian Composers – Science Glossary – Film Title Pairs – Say “Love” – Moving Words & Phrases

Will found the first Daily Double in “Islands” under the $16,000 clue on the 6th pick. He was in second place with $6,200 now, $3,000 less than Jenna’s lead. Will made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

In 1902, an eruption of Mount Pelée on this French island destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre show

Jenna got the last Daily Double in “Say ‘Love'” under the $1,600 clue on the 12th pick. In the lead with $15,200, she had $1,600 more than Will in second place. Jenna bet $2,000 and, forgetting the category, said “The Wasteland”. That was WRONG.

The June 1915 issue of Poetry Magazine contained an angry letter from Ezra Pound as well as this poem by T.S. Eliot show

Will finished in the lead with $19,600. Jenna was next with $14,400 and Steve was in third place with $9,200. All clues were shown.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE BLARNEY STONE?

J.W. Ocker’s “Odd Things I’ve Seen” website has a great page with great pics on the Blarney Stone and explains the legend referred to in today’s FJ!: half of the Stone of Scone was gifted to the Gaelic King of Munster, Cormac McCarthy, by Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots. Cormac’s men took it back to Blarney Castle where it became the Blarney Stone.

Other legends Mr. Ochs touches on are the “gift of gab” version and his favorite, (which is also now my
favorite). You’ll have to visit his site to find out what it is, but it’s not the Jacob’s Pillow version that was in this $400 Rockpile of History clue from last March: Sharing a name with an Irish castle, this illustrious rock was said to be used as a pillow by Jacob as he dreamed of a fancy ladder.

Steve came up with a royal crest. He bet and lost his whole $9,200.

Jenna thought it was a unicorn sword. She lost $5,201 and finished with $9,199.

Will got it right. He bet $9,201 and won the game with $28,801. Will’s 2-day total is $45,602.

Final Jeopardy (12/9/2025) Will Riley, Steve Riddell, Jenna LaFleur

Reversal: THAT’S PROBABLY ILLEGAL ($200) aka “false making”, this crime can apply to art, like 450 pieces in Italy in 2024 that were not in fact by Klimt et al – Ken rejected counterfeiting from Steve. Will got it with forgery. The judges okayed Steve’s reply.

A triple stumper from each round:

MILD TV SPOILERS ($1000) In Season One, Episode One, of “Bridgerton”, this actor, as Lord Anthony, rides a horse

MOVING WORDS & PHRASES ($2000) It can mean one traveling on foot or be the British word for the item shown (image)

For some reason, I couldn’t access this site Tues night. Kept getting a “User has too many requests” msg or something like that. Tried two different browsers. Weird.

Formidable challengers played well. I’m OK with Jenna’s $5201 Final wager, but Will more or less had to bet at least $9201 and get it wrong for her to have a chance, so maybe a $4K wager would have been better for her, leaving her with $10400 and him with $10399 if both missed FJ.

Blanked on Final, I said sword, and got only the first DD. Knew the $2K Moving word. So who is this “Christ” O’Donnell who was in a film with Clooney? 🙂

lol, Howard, thanks for pointing that out. Sometimes my fingers finish a word with what they think I meant to type, kind of like autocorrect. I just wouldn’t have noticed that extra ‘t’ yesterday because I went to the eye doctor, she dilated my pupils and I was doing the recap with shades on.😎 My daughter calls it my cool cat look.

I was worried about Will for a stretch in Double Jeopardy! After he got that French island DD on the 6th clue, he was only heard from once until Clue 22, when they got back to the Russian composers. That was definitely his category! It helped him regain the lead but, being the only one to get FJ!, he likely would have won anyway.
