Final Jeopardy: Inventions (12-19-23)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/19/2023) in the category “Inventions” was:

Invented in 1816, it takes its name from Greek for “chest” & “observe”

A new Second Chance Tournament kicks off today with these 3 contestants: Jason Carpenter, a stand-up comic from Santa Rosa Valley, CA; Eva Thomas, an attorney from Brooklyn, NY; and Mike Elliott, a meat cutter orig. from Derry, NH.

Round 1 Categories: Mammals in Latin – Cautionary Rhymes – King’s Crossing – Always in Fashion – Unofficial Team Nicknames – Famous Last Words

Eva found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “King’s Crossing” under the $800 clue on the 11th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $4,000, $2,200 more than Jason in second place. Eva bet $2,000 and thought it was King Philip. That was WRONG.

In 1516, 11 years after losing the Queen he called the “most excellent wife King ever had”, this Castile royal left the castle show

Eva finished in the lead with $4,200. Jason was in second place with $3,600. Mike was last with $3,400. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: From the French – Cornerstones – Super Successful Sequels – Australian Books & Authors – It Happened in 2023 – Countries inside Other Country Names

Mike found the first Daily Double in “Cornerstones” under the $1,200 clue on the 15th pick of the round. He was in second place with $10,600, $200 less than Jason’s lead. Mike made it a true Daily Double and tried Yale. That was WRONG.

The cornerstone for this U.S. school’s oldest building, the Wren Building was placed in 1695 show

Mike got the last Daily Double in “Super Successful Sequels” under the $800 clue with 7 clues left after it. He was in last place with $800, $10,600 less than Jason’s lead. Mike bet $799 and he was RIGHT.

2015: A new theme park creates Indominus rex, a genetically modified dinosaur show

Jason finished with a runaway $12,000. Eva was in second place with $5,800. Mike was last with $2,799. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS A STETHOSCOPE?

From the Library of Medicine: “The stethoscope may be the one instrument common to all doctors. The word stethoscope comes from the Greek words stethos, meaning chest, and skopein, meaning to explore. This instrument may even supersede the caduceus as the symbol of medicine – no other symbol so strongly identifies a doctor than a stethoscope dangling around the neck like a talisman.” The article then goes on to describe how French physician René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec invented the stethoscope, which is pretty much covered in this video

The best part, imo, is how he got the idea from watching a couple of kids playing.

Mike had no response, just a thank you message. He only lost $45 and finished with $2,754.

Eva got it right. She stood pat on her $5,800.

Jason also got it right. He didn’t bet anything because he didn’t have to. Jason advances to the finals.

  1. Jason says:

It’s kind of a let down for me with the Second Chance players. It’s evident why they didn’t win the first time.

I noticed Eva a bit affronted, after Jason got that last clue correct, to ensure his runaway.

I got FJ, but could not remember Laennec’s name. I thought of von Leewonhouk, but he was the microscope (and apologies for mangling the Dutch name).

I totally forgot about The Thorn Birds. I thought of the movie Monsignor, from 1982, with Christopher Reeve. “Forgive me, Father for I have sinned. I have killed for my Country, I have stolen for my Church, I have loved a Woman, and I am a Priest.”

Even so, Jason has some good screen presence. We’ll see how far he goes.

    • VJ says:

Jason, I will never forget The Thorn Birds miniseries because the first time it aired on TV, right at the moment when Father Ralph (Richard Chamberlain) is about to kiss grown-up Meggie (Rachel Ward), there was a lightning strike in my area and it knocked everyone’s TV out for a minute so no one got to see that part. As you can imagine, everyone was talking about it the next day!

  2. Howard says:

Whew, came up with FJ with under 10 seconds to go.
I thought someone might know that epic McCullough novel, especially considering it was a major miniseries, but then again, it was 40 years ago.
“Castile royal” and “1516” pointed to one particular monarch of the era.

    • Howard says:

I needed more of a hint to get that Bill and Mary DD. My school used to pummel them in football. Knew 1695 was way too late for Harvard and Yale.

    • VJ says:

That miniseries was quite scandalous back then. I don’t think that many people would even tune in these days.

  3. Rick says:

Oh gee. Now why didn’t I think of stethoscope for FJ? Given the clues, it was obviously a slam dunk to be sure. I mean, I had used a mechanics stethoscope once for checking a fuel injector on my 2005 Jaguar XJ8L. In any case, it was a great game!

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

We’re still waiting for the game that all three players wager 0 in Final Jeopardy! That was the lowest bet from all three players in today’s game. It’s been a while since we seen that.
