WHO IS HENRY MOORE?

The quote in today’s final clue comes from “The Sculptor Speaks”, an article by British sculptor Henry Moore which was published in the weekly magazine “The Listener” on 8/18/1937. “Holes in Sculpture” is the third section of the article, in which he explains how “a piece of stone can have a hole through it and not be weakened….” The Tate has the whole article, and much more information about his life and works.

The Henry Moore Foundation website has an interactive map showing where Moore’s sculptures are located, the world over. Check it out. It’s awesome!

Allison thought it was Jackson Pollock. She lost $5,000 and finished with $1,200.

Pet went with Rothko. He lost $5,000 and finished with $12,800.

Chris wrote down Duchamp. That cost him $6,500 and left him with $12,700. So for the third day in a row, second place wins after a triple stumper. Pete Johnston will be joining Eugene Huang and Pete Widmayer in the 2-day final that begin tomorrow.

I was 2/3 on DD, but, add me to the list of anyone who has never heard of the FJ solution. I mean, that name doesn’t even make me say, “Wait a minute – I think I’ve heard that one before”. I said Salvador Dali.

Something about these competitors were more “Second Chance” that the first two days, like, it’s clear why they didn’t win. Maybe that’s just me.

The name meant nothing to me either, nor the holes hint. He was besties with Nelson Rockefeller but i never read that before today.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen sculptures like Moore’s in New York City though but I m not drawn to that art enough to say Whoa, who did that? (unlike a painting of chrysanthemums I once saw that I was ready to drop $600 on the spot for, only I couldn’t afford to.)

The interactive map I linked to shows only one of his sculptures is in Houston, about 20 miles from here.

  2. Howard says:

If you gave me 1000 guesses, Henry Moore would not have been one of them. I guessed Picasso.

Pretty good game again with a dramatic conclusion. Not sure why either guy wagered the $ amt he did. Pete IMO could have bet $1401 in case Chris went for $0. I thought Chris would go big. He was great in the add a letter category.

I thought the first 2 DDs were kinda easy. Osteoporosis gave away the first. Wasn’t impressed when no one knew the classic Newman-Shaw film. The “Raise” novel was obvious, the Boston ship (which we boarded in 1997) pretty much a giveaway. Thought for sure someone would recognize the sibs with the podcast. I know him from multiple shows, and she’s been around for a long time. And their mom is pretty famous too.

Hmmmm……………I did pretty well in today’s game, but flubbed the FJ. In fact, I went with Picasso (for lack of a better choice). As for Henry Moore, I never heard of him until now.

  4. Steve Bearss says:

Have they gotten a final jeopardy right this week

  5. VJ says:

Wow, they’re really sticking it to the Second Chancers with these tough FJs. I wouldn’t be surprised if the final clues in the last 2 games are easy but I will be shocked if they are triple stumpers, too!
