Final Jeopardy: Sci-Fi TV (12-12-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/12/2018) in the category “Sci-Fi TV” was:

One of the twin planets this alien race called home was Remus

New champ Nicole Cocklin, a travel agent from Fort Wayne, IN, won $20,001 yesterday. In Game 2, her opponents are: Andy Greeley, an elections administrator from Seattle, WA; and Elana Schor, a journalist from Washington, D.C.

Round 1 Categories: Famous Women – 21st Century Films – Tools Are Confusing – 3 Words for 3 Letters – Read It – A.M.A.

Andy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Read It” under the $800 clue on the 7th pick of the round. He was in second place with $1,000, $600 less than Elana’s lead. He went with a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Andy finished in the lead with $23,600. Elana was next with $15,600 and Nicole was in third place with $7,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE THE ROMULANS?

From the Memory Alpha wiki on Fandom: “The Romulans were a humanoid race from the planet Romulus. The Romulans were biological cousins of Vulcans, descended from those who rejected Surak’s reforms during the Time of Awakening. The Romulan Star Empire was the Romulan polity and one of the major powers in the galaxy by the 24th century.” Later in the article, it says: “At some point, they settled on twin planets that became known as Romulus and Remus….”

Another Romulan clue from 2015: OTHER STAR TREK CHARACTERS ($400) Mark Lenard played the first fully seen Romulan, the first Klingon with the forehead ridges & logically, the dad of this guy

Nicole got it right. She didn’t bet anything though, so she stayed at $7,600.

Elana got it, too. She bet $8,001 for a $23,601 finish.

Andy went with Vulcan (“Obvious, but I overthought it”). He lost his $7,601 bet so he landed in second place with $15,999. That made Elana Schor the new Jeopardy! champ.

Andy is my friend he had romulans at first and switched it to Vulcans because the Roman god Vulcan and Romulus founded Rome. The question was sort of convoluted and honestly I didn’t think it was very clear. Plus the category was sci-fi TV not sci-fi films.

  2. Albert says:

I don’t watch that Star Trek nonsense, except to watch Marina Sirtis sometimes on the Next Generation. I guessed Vulcan.

I hate when Jeopardy asks Finals about stupid things like Star Trek. Ask about World Geography, U.S. Presidents, UK Monarchs, but not stupid Star Trek. What a waste for a FJ !!!

  3. VJ says:

@Rhonda, I had to use that part from the Memory Alpha wiki today because it had “the Romulan polity” LOL!!

P.S. Did you get the Drifters’ song clue?

LINK: 11 more clues from the match

    • rhonda says:

Oh, dear,VJ, there’s that polity again lol. Thanks for pointing it out to me, I didn’t read that far because it was about Star Trek lol.
Yes, I got it, I love that song! I’m sure you knew it, too!

      • VJ says:

Yup, Rhonda, I got it — written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. I always like that one better than “Under the Boardwalk”

        • rhonda says:

That’s funny, VJ, both are great, but I like “Under the Boardwalk” better.

        • VJ says:

That’s cool, Rhonda. Honestly, if I had all their singles on 45, I would play “Saturday Night at the Movies” first

      • rhonda says:

What a fun song that is!!
You’ve brought back memories of stacking up the 45’s!!

  4. Phil says:

Surprised that wasn’t a clean sweep given the Remus and Romulus tie-in, but then again my mother had me watching Star Trek at an early age.
@Lou, I think you’ve confused the Romulans and Vulcans. Leonard Nimoy was the conflicted Spock, half Human, half Vulcan.

  5. Richard Corliss says:

    Now it’s SYFY TV.

  6. John Christian Ambion says:

I thought Andy will end the game in a runaway, but Elana’s $7,000 DD paid off and as Alex said, “a runaway game no longer.” It was very obvious, given the clue about Romulus and Remus, but unfortunately, Andy made a wild mistake and lost too much, making Elana the fourth person in a row to become new Jeopardy! champion. If tomorrow and the next day have the same scenario, it’s going to be a long road from here because we haven’t reached a repeat champion.

  7. Lou says:

Andy must not have watched star trek or heard of Leonard Nimoy. There have also been a ton of star trek movies that have been out on DVD that mentioned Romulus and Remus. By the way VJ and John, you guys heard of nimoy right? At this point glad that all the daily doubles are nailed. Congratulations to Elena. Although I would love to see Nicole bet more if she wants to win again.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
Of course. DeForest Kelly was my “favorite”, as bones. Liked his tongue in cheek character.!!

  8. John B./I. says:

Is it just me who finds it….remarkable, that a world capital (Addis Ababa), having been in the news constantly for the better part of the 20th century gets the same number of correct responses as a fictitious race in TNG?
Congratulations to Elena, who reset the ToC clock again….How Andy could miss this, I don’t know. Romulus and Remus were the founders of Rome, according to legend and Remus was in the clue. Andy -as he said – did overthink it I guess.
