TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS GEORGE ORWELL?

In 2003, a “Centennial” edition of George Orwell’s 1949 novel “1984” was published in honor of the 100th anniversary of Orwell’s birth. The foreword was written by American author Thomas Pyncheon. It also includes an afterword by German-American philosopher Erich Fromm (1900–1980), written in 1961 (I think).

Pyncheon wrote that Orwell had come to see the British Labour party “as potentially, if not already, fascist…. professing to fight for the working classes against capitalism, but in reality concerned only with establishing and perpetuating their own power.” Pynchon has a lot more to say before he gets to the part in the clue: “Orwell in 1948 understood that despite the Axis defeat, the will to fascism had not gone away, that far from having seen its day it had perhaps not yet even come into its own….”

Amal got it right. He bet it all and doubled his score to $22,400.

Donesh went with Roth. He bet and lost his whole $12,600.

Emma also got it right. She bet $10,201 and won the game with $25,201.

I was convinced the Final answer was Ayn Rand.

Excellent comeback by Emma! Go NY Go NY GO!

Excellent game, and what a comeback by Emma after she stood silent throughout the first segment. DDs were unkind to me, but FJ was a gimme.

Silly answers given for the southern line parallel to the equator. It wasn’t difficult. Only others I got were the directors of “Play Misty for Me” (very good movie) and “400 Blows,” and the Ontario rocker.
