Final Jeopardy: Literary Characters (11-8-19)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/8/2019) in the category “Literary Characters” was:
From an 1894 work, his name literally translates to “Tiger King”
Today is the 5th and last Quarterfinal of Jeopardy!’s 2019 Tournament of Champions. The players are: Ryan Fenster, 7x champ ($156,497); Steven Grade, 5x champ ($115,501); and Francois Barcomb, 2019 Teachers Tournament champ ($100,000).
Round 1 Categories: Organizations – Newer Words & Phrases – Miscellany – Setting the Scene in Shakespeare – November Datebook – Single-Named Celebs
Francois found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “November Datebook” under the $1,000 clue on the 14th pick of the round. He was in second place with $2,600, $1,600 less than Steven’s lead. He bet $2,500 and he was RIGHT.
On Nov. 9, 1908 a tradition began as hotel guest Archie Bailey ordered 25 of these to put in the rooms. show
Steven finished in the lead with $8,400. Francois was second with $7,100 and Ryan was last with $1,800. Ryan got dinged for $800 on a reversal (see below) before Double Jeopardy! began, so his score dropped to $1,000.
Round 2 Categories: Classic Rock Guitarists – Bodies of Water – Stamps – Tough Crossword Clues – Black Holes – Revelations
Ryan found the first Daily Double in “Revelations” under the $1,600 clue on the 9th pick. He was in third place with $5,400 now, $9,300 less than Francois in the lead. He bet it all and thought it was Jim Bridger. That was WRONG. Alex thought that Ryan would get it right and “start singing again.” LOL! (Ryan sang the answer to a Miscellany clue — see below).
A bestselling 1836 “Autobiography” by this frontiersman who died that year was revealed as a hoax in the 1880s. show
Francois found the last Daily Double in “Bodies of Water” under the $800 clue, with 10 clues left after it. In the lead with $24,300, he had $14,700 more than Steven in second place. He bet $8,000 and he was RIGHT.

Francois finished in the lead with a runaway $34,300. Steven was next with $9,200 and Ryan was in third place with $4,000.
ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Here is Rudyard Kipling’s own explanation for his choice of the tiger’s name in “The Jungle Book” (1894): “Shere Khan is pronounced Sheer Karn. ‘Shere’ means ‘Tiger’ in some of the Indian dialects, and ‘Khan’ is a title, more or less of distinction, to show that he was a chief among tigers.” He also sheds some light on the other characters’ names and points out the ones he made up, like “Mowgli” for the man-cub and “Kaa” for the snake.
This blog page on EuroTalk lists meanings for a bunch of fictional characters.
Ryan bet it all and finished with $8,000.
Steven bet it all, too. That brought him up to $18,400.
Francois didn’t bet anything as he was already the 5th semi-finalist.
The 4 other semi-finalists are: Gilbert Collins, Dhruv Gaur, James Holzhauer and Emma Boettcher. Steven snagged a Wild Card spot so he is in the Final Four, along with the Kyle Jones, Lindsey Shultz and Rachel Lindgren.
As always, thanks to Richard for listing the players’ scores in the comments every day.
Ryan’s song: STAMPS ($1600) That’s the spotted type of this eel on the Coral Reef postcard stamp (image shown) – Ryan could not resist singing “That’s a moray.” He almost forgot to phrase it in the form of a question but quickly corrected himself on that.
Reversal: ORGANIZATIONS ($400) Representing more than 6,000 schools, this organization had “Entrance Examination” in its name when it started in 1900 – The judges rejected Ryan’s response because he added an “S” to College Board.
There was only one triple stumper in the whole game:
ORGANIZATIONS ($800) Mark Cuban & Subway Sandwiches founder Fred DeLuca are among alumni of this org. formed to teach business savvy to the “junior” set

I predict the finalists will be James Holzhauer, Francois Barcomb, and Emma Boettcher.
Either on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, Emma, Dhruv, & Kyle will be up against each other.
To me, it seemed like the 1st Round, Fridays, and Ryan Fenster have never been good friends, and as of today, things haven’t changed.
I’m still trying to figure out what made Ryan say Jim Bridger on that Daily Double. Okay, let’s say you don’t know the Battle of the Alamo happened in 1836. Still, I think frontiersman would make most people think it was between Daniel Boone and Crockett. Then let’s say you do know when the Battle of the Alamo happened and who died there. Then you would have to decide between Crockett and Jim Bowie.
As for Jim Bridger, he lived a long life in the 19th century and is generally referred to as a “mountain man.” There’s a song named “Jim Bridger” and in one part it says he “spoke to General Custer” (before the Battle of Little Bighorn)
Ryan changed because he grew a beard and mustache.
You notice Francois Barcomb scored higher than James Holzhauer this week.
Congratulations to all the semi finalists and the contestants today on getting final right. Shere Khan is one of my favorite villains of all time aside from Cruella de Vil. Francois dominated the whole game today
My all-time favorite Disney villains are Stromboli from Pinocchio and Ursula from The Little Mermaid (that “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song was the stuff!).
My daughter says her favorite are Hades (from Hercules), Shere Khan and Kaa, and Ursula and the one she hated the most was Scar in The Lion King.
Wow! Francois really went to town in that last round. Looks like the 3 players they will definitely put in different semi-finals are Francois, James and Emma.
The title of a chapter in “The Jungle Book” was the topic of FJ! in the first Wild Card match last February.
