WHO IS G.I. JOE?
According to Time.com’s 2009 article on G.I. Joe’s history, Hasbro was inspired to develop the G.I. Joe series by the success Mattel was having with Barbie dolls in the early 1960s. The name for the new line of toys came from a 1945 film called “The Story of G.I. Joe,” where G.I. stood for “Government-Issue Joe.” The military-themed dolls came with different outfits and equipment and were enormously popular until “American involvement in Vietnam dampened enthusiasm for a camo-clad action figure, so Hasbro gave Joe an honorable discharge. It redesigned the toys and relaunched them in 1970 as Adventures of G.I. Joe: the figure received lifelike hair, moveable eyes and a “kung-fu” grip, enabling him to hold onto objects for the first time. But the changes proved to be a gimmick, taken even further by Hasbro with the development of a space-traveling “Super Joe” in 1976. The reception was lukewarm, and by 1978, Joe was retired from service entirely.”
G.I. Joe made a comeback in the 1980s thanks to “Star Wars.” Hasbro reinvented G.I. Joes with backstories, code names and Cobra, an enemy force with its own action figures. Among other mediums, Joe turned up on animated cartoons, video games and Marvel comics.
Sri thought it was Barbie’s man, Ken. He lost his $1,200 bet and finished with $7,600.
Kate got it right. She added $5,800 to her score, bringing her up to $20,000.
Jeff came up with Jungle Jim, an earlier Tarzan competitor. He lost $11,800 and finished with $5,400. That made Kate Kohn the new Jeopardy! champ. Ken Jennings will be hosting when Kate plays her second game next Monday. Don’t miss it!

Terrific challengers tonight. Sri’s late run came up well short. Jeff could well have had a runaway had he not missed the two DDs, but I considered both to be tough. Thought the final was a cinch, maybe because I was in college in 1970.
Would LOVE to see Mayim become the permanent host!
That final question was only too easy, and I’m only surprised that just one contestant came up with the correct response. No, it wouldn’t have been Jungle Jim since no toy manufacturer ever came up with that action figure.
Jeff was in the lead going into FJ but Im glad Kate won and not him.
Well we enjoyed Mayim’s hosting on jeopardy so far. Can’t wait to see Ken hosting next week. I also got GI Joe since there is a cartoon of that show based on the toy.
So that is the end of Mayim Bialik’s hosting stint. And we’re excited next week that Ken Jennings will once again host for the remaining of 2021.
I’m not sure that would be the end of Mayim Balik’s hosting stint. Perhaps she and Ken Jennings will simply alternate as guest hosts from now on, and that would be perfectly fine with me. In fact, Mayim Balik may well end up as the permanent host of the show.
IMO, Mayim is the best host of them all, and I do mean ALL.
It’s no secret that Mayim is actively vying for the permanent host of the Jeopardy game show, and I think they should give it to her. I mean, she definitely fits right in, and clearly enjoys being on the show.
