Final Jeopardy: British Cities (11-27-23)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/27/2023) in the category “British Cities” was:

Over the motto “Fortis est veritas”, the coat of arms of this city features a beast of burden crossing over some water

The first final match of the Champions Wildcard (Clubs) Tournament features the 3 winners from last week’s semi-finals: Jen Jazwinski, Dennis Chase, and Nick Cascone.

Jen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Woman in Science” under the $1,000 clue on the 9th pick of the round. She was in last place with $1,000, $800 less than Dennis’ lead. Jen bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

With her husband George, Gladys Dick found the cause of this childhood disease named for its red skin rash & came up with a cure show

Dennis got the last Daily Double in “Supreme Courtship” under the $2,000 clue with 8 clues left. He was in second place with $14,600, $200 less than Nick’s lead. Dennis bet $7,000 but drew a blank so he was WRONG.

He avoided the clear & present danger of bachelorhood by marrying Fanny Dixwell in 1872 show

Nick finished in the lead with $16,800. Jen was in second place with $11,600. Dennis was last with $6,800. All clues were shown.

WHAT IS OXFORD?

Oxford is the only city in Oxfordshire, a county in South East England. Its name is derived from Anglo-Saxon “Oxenaford” or “ford for oxen”. Two rivers run through the city of Oxford, the Thames and the Cherwell, so they must have had a lot of oxen making the trip across those waters back in the day. The motto “Fortis est veritas” means “strength in truth”; I could not find out when it was adopted but I did learn that Oxford University’s motto on its coat of arms is completely different: “Dominus illuminatio mea” which comes from Psalm 27 and means “the Lord is my light”.

A far less challenging clue from 1990: CITY NAME ORIGINS ($100) It’s the place in England where the oxen forded the river Thames

Dennis thought it might be Manchester. He lost $3,800 and finished with $3,000.

Jen went with Canterbury. That cost her $6,000 and left her with $5,600.

Nick wrote down Hereford and said “I know it now.” That was good but it didn’t count so he lost his $7,500 bet and finished with $9,300. These scores will be carried forward and added to the scores at the end of tomorrow’s game to determine who wins the big prizes.

Final Jeopardy (11/27/2023) Jen Jazwinkski, Dennis Chase, Nick Cascone

A triple stumper from each round:

PICK A SIDE ($1000) Try sauteeing these green leaves of the taro plant to go with your jerk chicken; it’s also the name of a soup using the greens

First, props to VJ for a 33 year old clue!!

The first round was what I expected – just blazing good. It’s remarkable the difference between this tourney and the second chance. However, Dennis blanking, and not saying anything, was atypical. Nick was prescient in catching himself and forming a question.

I got the Zac Brown Band clue because my wife is a huge fan! She says they’re all accomplished musicians – the bass player does a version of Enter Sandman, from Metallica, which is better than Metallica’s!

I missed final. I thought it was canny that the subject was “British” Cities, not “English”. As such, I first thought something in Scotland, but then said Cardiff, Wales (I went fanciful for the beast of burden with a dragon). Didn’t even think of the rebus!

I’m def happy with this group. Look forward to tomorrow!

I first thought of Manchester for FJ, and then went for Stratford-upon-Avon (for lack of a better choice). Oh well!

Can’t watch tonight or the next few. FJ and 2/3 DDs and all but one of the stumpers eluded me. A bit surprised that middle DD was a $2000 clue. Even if you don’t know what “fer” is in English, you might know that Fe is its chemical symbol, and its pills are called ferrous sulfate.

Tough final to start the week as we got a triple stumper thanks to that pesky geography clue.

Coincidence: Anybody who looked at the old clues on Spoiler Talk this morning would have nailed the poet who loved Laura. hee hee hee. Also, the doctor and poet father of the Supreme Court justice was in an old clue on there, though idk how much help that would have been.
