TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SRI LANKA?

In July 2022, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, then president of Sri Lanka, fled the Indian Ocean island country amid massive protests against his administration that were becoming violent. He went to the Maldives, another Indian Ocean island nation which lies about 600 miles to the southwest of Sri Lanka, as the crow flies. Rajapaksa then went east to Singapore and resigned his presidency from there. He spent a few weeks in Thailand and returned to Sri Lanka in September. According to Al Jazeera, a protest leader stated that Rajapaksa’s return would not be a problem “as long as he is held accountable” and stays out of politics.

Besides the Maldives and Sri Lanka, there are 4 other island nations in the Indian Ocean

Sam got it right but he didn’t bet a rupee so he stayed at $12,000.

Amy went with Indonesia, which is east of Sri Lanka and the Maldives. She lost her $10,000 bet and finished with $4,600.

Andrew also got it right. He bet $10,401 and won the game with $29,201.

I guessed at FJ, and got it right. So, I’ll take that. I don’t know about Sam’s strategy of a zero wager. Each game is a standalone “first past the post”. It was interesting to see Andrew use his DD strategy, at least early. Of course, this makes him the favorite right now to win, as he is ahead. That’s not a lock – ere we wouldn’t need the rest of the tourney! I do look forward to the rest of it. Notably, I am not looking at the listings on the DVR. Unlike sports games, with “as needed”, for future games, the number is already known, and I don’t want to accidentally find out how many are left (such as, if there was two, then I would know it was Andrew).

An article today on TVInsider said something similar, asking whether producers inadvertantly revealed who wins.

  2. Rick says:

Kudos to Andrew for playing an excellent game tonight. Yeah, I do recall the Sri Lanka president fleeing the country amid the violent protests, but I just didn’t remember the name of the country in FJ.

  3. Lou says:

Andrew played well for today’s game, but I am hoping either Amy or Sam will win their first game tomorrow and praying that they get a final right.

It was ironic that Amy gave a wrong answer of Maldives to the $1000 clue in The Southern Hemisphere category (This republic of 115 islands northeast of Madagascar was uninhabited until its 18th century settlement by the French), and then Maldives turned up in the FJ! clue.
