Final Jeopardy: Symbols (11-14-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/14/2013) in the category “Symbols” was:

One legend says Clovis, King of the Franks, adopted this symbol after flowers revealed a safe river crossing for his army.

We’re up to the 4th match of the Teachers Tournament quarter-finals today and the competitors are: John Pearson from Richardson, TX; Maryanne Lewell, from St. John, New Brunswick, CA; and Becky Giardina, from Martinez, GA.

John found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Annual Events” before the first break. He was already on quite the roll and had $6,000. Both ladies were in a negative tie with -$600. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

This holiday falls on what was once the last day of the Celtic year when the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. show

John finished in the lead with $9,800. Maryanne was second with $5,000 and Becky was last with $1,200.

Maryanne found the first Daily Double in “I Resign.” She was in second place with $8,600, $2,800 less than John’s lead. She bet $2,000 and thought it was Chick-Fil-A. That was WRONG.

In 2013, the Chairman of this food company chicken-tendered his resignation as a Univ. of Arkansas Trustee. show

Becky found the last Daily Double in “Ends in ‘U’.” In third place with $4,400, she was $8,400 behind John’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE FLEUR-DE-LIS?

“In the twelfth century, either King Louis VI or King Louis VII (sources disagree) became the first French monarch to use the fleur-de-lis on his shield. English kings later used the symbol on their coats of arms to emphasize their claims to the throne of France. In the 14th century, the fleur-de-lis was often incorporated into the family insignia that was sewn on the knight’s surcoat, which was worn over their coat of mail, thus the term, “coat of arms….” (Fleur-de-Lis.com)

Maryanne bet it all and finished with $18,800.

Becky bet $8,001, finishing with $18,801.

John didn’t have to bet anything so he didn’t and he won the quarter-final spot with $22,600.

It’s gonna take a tight game tomorrow to knock even one person off this Wild Card list:

Mary Beth Hammerstrom $20,000
Becky Giardina $18,801
Maryanne Lewell $18,000
Katie Moriarity $16,400
