Final Jeopardy: International Groups (11-12-18)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/12/2018) in the category “International Groups” was:
The economic bloc known as the G8 became the G7 in 2014 upon the expulsion of this country
We’re starting the week with the 4th Quarterfinal of the 2018 Teen Tournament. Today’s player are all high school seniors: Tim Cho, from Champaign, IL; Jack Izzo, from San Diego, CA; and Rhea Sinha, from Chatham, NJ.
Round 1 Categories: School Uniforms – U.S. Cities – Movie Adjectives – Music Class – Just My Luck! – In the Spanish Dictionary
Tim found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “U.S. Cities” under the $800 clue, with 10 clues to go after it. He was in second place with $1,800, $2,800 behind both Jack and Rhea, tied for the lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Providence. That was WRONG.
This New England capital shares its name with James Madison’s Virginia plantation. show
Jack finished in the lead with $6,000. Rhea was second with $4,600 and Tim was last with $2,200.
Round 2 Categories: Assigned Lockers – Hodgepodge – Classic Literature – Theme Parks – Ecology – In the English Dictionary
Tim found the first Daily Double in “Classic Literature” under the $800 clue on the very first pick. So the scores were the same as above. He went with a true Daily Double again and this time, he was RIGHT.
When these 2 boys & their pal Joe Harper are presumed dead, they hide in the church & hear their own funerals. show
Tim got the last Daily Double in “Ecology” under the $2,000 clue, with 9 clues left after it. In second place with $13,600, he had $400 less than Jack’s lead. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.
In 2018 the U.K. ran without this fossil fuel for 3 consecutive days for the first time since the 19th century. show
Tim finished in the lead with $17,400. Jack was next with $16,800 and Rhea was in third place with $11,800.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS RUSSIA?
In March 2014, Russia was suspended from the G8 bloc over its annexation of Crimea. The G8 then became the G7 (the UK, US, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada). According to The Independent, in January 2017, Russia announced that it had no plans to rejoin the bloc and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that “Vladimir Putin’s priority was now the G20 – a much wider group of countries which includes emerging economies such as Brazil and Mexico as well as Turkey and Saudi Arabia.”
In 7/22/2010, there was a whole category called “I COULDA HAD A G8.” This was the $400 clue: There is actually a ninth member of the G8, this organization usually referred to by 2 letters
Rhea wasn’t able to finish her response of “Germa.” She lost her $5,000 bet, leaving her with $6,800.
Jack got it right. He bet $1,200 and finished with $18,000.
Tim got it right, too. He bet $16,201 and won the semi-final spot with $33,601.
Jack got a good spot on the Wild Card list with his score and Rhea got the last spot for now. With one more quarterfinal to go, the scores to beat are
$16,999 and $6,800.
Two triple stumpers from the first round:
MOVIE ADJECTIVES ($800) “The ___ Now”, Miles Teller & Shailene Woodley
JUST MY LUCK! ($200) St. Dunstan, a blacksmith, made a deal that Satan couldn’t enter through a door with this lucky item nailed above it

Well Rhea wasn’t close but still I hope she can make it into the semi-finals. Glad to know that the other two guys got final right since Russia has been accused of the election hacking scandal. I am sure VJ and John you guys have heard of this news about Russia and this scandal with the presidential election right? The other four players are out and will go home with 5000 dollars. We still have one more day before we see the semi-finalists.
@Lou Yeah, I heard about it but it has nothing to do with the G7/G8. As VJ already pointed out, Russia was kicked out over the 2014 annexation of Crimea.
@Lou, I will be real surprised if Rhea makes it. It’s possible though, I guess, esp if the scores at the end of DJ are in the same range as today.
@John, I was referring to the FJ category: International Groups

Boy, calling Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” (strangely enough called “Mondschein = Moonshine Sonata in the original German)
“pretty good” is the understatement of 2 centuries imo.
Wow, Rhea was outperformed by these two young gentlemen, BUT will it be enough? A very easy FJ! by the way, and I have a feeling that this year’s TT final would be ALL three men, but I have very high hopes for a woman to win.
@VJ
First of all: CONGRATULATIONS for today’s prediction!
Everytime I give the players full credit….sigh…. But it’s a generation thing too. Russia was expelled because of Crimea and 4 years ago Rhea was just too young I guess. The other 2 got it though. But Germany? Most important member together with the U.S.
So far the ladies have the upper hand. Let’s see what happens
tomorrow.
AND THANK YOU,VJ!!! Your “I coulda had a G8” link to J-archive solved my problem. I looked it up, then thought i try it and all of a sudden it works! So I saved that link and tried again: I can get everything in J-archive! So thanks again! (Still have no idea what the problem was or still is, if I go from the “Clue responses….” it still doesn’t work. But problem solved!😃😃
@John B./I. When was the last time a woman win the Teen Tournament? I hope 2018 will END that streak.
@J C A
Almost……2 more days!
I meant, THE year.
2012 when Elyse Mancuso won the Teen Tournament in D.C. broke the tournament record $79,600. Beating 2009 winner Rachel Rothenberg who had $63,800. In 2012 it had an all girl game.
@Richard Corliss I hope that Maya Wright, Audrey Satchivi, Emma Arnold, Claire Sattler, or one of the remaining females MIGHT win it all. Tim Cho and Caleb Richmond are playing like Arthur Chu and Alex Jacob, so I don’t want to see a young man win.
@VJ
Idk why, but your link worked like Drano. !! You did with one inadvertent link what all the “specialists” at my internet provider couldn’t do.
Getting a Daily Double at the beginning of the Double Jeopardy! round is a good way to start off.
