Final Jeopardy: State Holidays (11-10-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (11/10/2014), in the category “State Holidays” was:
This is the only state that honors a former U.S. Secretary of State with his own legal holiday.
The quarter-final matches of the 2014 Tournament of Champions begin today. Competing in the first match Ben Ingram 8x champ ($176,534); Rebecca Rider, 5x champ ($101,600); and John Pearson, $100,00 winner of the 2013 Teachers Tournament.
Round 1: Ben found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “A Little Alliteration” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $1,800, $600 more than John in second place. He made it a true Daily Double but took a guess with the non-alliterative reply “figures of speech”. That was WRONG.
“Put the ship of state on its feet” & “play your cards to the hilt” are 2 of these expressions. show
Rebecca finished in the lead with $3,800. Ben was second with $2,400 and John was last with $2,000.
Round 2: Round 2: John found the first Daily Double in “They Turned My Book into a Movie” under the $1,600 clue. He was in third place with $2,000, $8,000 less than Ben’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was thought it was (Stanley) Kubrick. That was WRONG.
Apocalypse Now. show

Grete Waitz served as one of these pacesetters in her first New York City Marathon: She won the race and set a world record. show
Ben finished in the lead with $16,100. John was next with $8,400 and Rebecca was in third place with $6,600.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Seward’s Day commemorates when the United States bought Alaska from Russia for about $7.2 million in 1867. William Henry Seward, who was Secretary of State at the time, signed the treaty with Russia on March 30, 1867. It is celebrated annually on the last Monday in March.
“Seward’s Day is a public holiday in Alaska so government offices, post offices, as well as many courts and libraries, are closed. Many public schools are open but some schools finish early for the day and many businesses are closed. Those intending on travelling by public transport on this day will need to check the public transport schedules for any changes ahead of time.” (Time and Date.com)
Rebecca got it right. She bet $5,000 and finished with $11,600.
John thought it was Maine. He bet and lost it all.
Ben also got it. His $701 bet brought him up to $16,801 so he won the match and is the first semi-finalist.

In this match, they had this clue:
$800 – I MARRIED: the future Holy Roman Emperor Francis I, a love match that produced 16 kids.
$1000 – ROYAL WOMEN $1000: Marie Antoinette was among the 16 children of this Holy Roman empress & archduchess
Marie Antoinette’s parents were also the great grandparents of Napoleon’s second wife, Marie Louise.
I learn stuff whether Jeopardy players give right or wrong answers. Here’s what I learned because of John’s FJ answer:
Maine contributed 2 Secretaries of State:
John Blaine (who served twice, under Garfield and under B. Harrison). Blaine was with Garfield when he was shot.
Edmund Muskie (under Jimmy Carter). His middle name was Sixtus.
VJ, have you checked your email? There might be some help there.
Ben won 16,801……Alaska (fj), William Seward (SS)
According to a Jeopardy forum, these were the FJ wagers:
Rebecca: $6600 + $5000 = $11600
John: $8400 – $8400 = $0
Ben: $16100 + $701 = $16801
oh and John got that last clue. So he finished with $2,000.
I live in California, and I get it at 7:00, but either way, BURN IN HELL, KHOU! How am I going to find out who won now??
LOL Arjav, at least you will get to watch it. They will probably name the winner on twitter in about 15 minutes.
True dat…though I know that John made a TDD somewhere in DJ and got it wrong.
in hawaii it’s on at 4, unless they have thu night football, in which case it is on at noon. but not anymore. thu they show football only on nfl channel now, used to be nfl and cbs (local KGMB).
as i said i am curious how many will sew up fj today (johnny horton…) and will they accept the person as well as the state? you always will have to ask yourself from now on how they might “bend” the outcome, what is “acceptable” and what not. especially when the clue MIGHT by a stretch permit multiple answers (see last friday).or permit it by j’s interpretation, even though fri clearly the TEAM was asked for. and in a tournament there are many ways to influence results…
so i guess we won’t know whether they would have accepted seward as well today….
