Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/1/2023) in the category “21st Century Presidential Elections” was:

WHAT IS 2008?

When this was the FJ! clue in 2015, the category didn’t narrow it down to the 21st Century so there was a lot less to process this time around. In the 2008 Presidential election, Barack Obama was the Democratic candidate for President. He ran against Republican candidate John McCain and won. George W. Bush was about to finish his second term as President and therefore could not run in the 2008 race for the White House. VP Dick Cheney chose to not seek the nomination.

Here are some more “firsts” from 270towin.com: The 2008 election was:
• the first time an African American was elected President;
• the first time 2 sitting senators ran against each other;
• the first time the Republican Party nominated a woman for Vice President (Sarah Palin, then-Governor of Alaska); and
• the first election in which both major parties nominated candidates who were born outside of the contiguous United States.

Nancy thought it was 2004. She lost $2,000 and finished with $6,400.

Dana was going for names. That would have worked, Ken said, if she had the right ones, but all she had was “For.” She bet and lost her whole $14,200.

Dave got it right. He bet $10,001 and won the game with $28,401. The semifinals begin tomorrow. We don’t know if Dave will be in that one. If not, he’ll definitely be in one of the other two.

Final Jeopardy (11/1/2023) Dana Hill, Nancy Donehower, Dave Rapp

    Dave Rapp is in the 1st Semi-Final game, and his opponents are Emily Sands & Yoshie Hill.

    I know the Hans Men and Women of Science clue, both from biochem undergrad and in med school, and, also, in med school, met Edmond Fischer, who won the 1992 Med or Physio prize with Edwin same name as clue (but, they weren’t related)! Professor Fischer was a really interesting and funny guy.

    FJ came to me after a few moments. I am embarrassed to say I got the Greek/Roman gods DD wrong. As occasionally happens, got a little less than half the TS correct.

    And congrats to Dave! As Kevin said, 2 mohawks in the semis!

    I ran out of time while running through all the elections starting in 1956.
    Would have figured it out in due time, but really should have known it.
    I’d have to double-check, but I believe Carter is the only Democratic incumbent president to lose in the last 100 or so years.

    The science society and the Betsy/Dolley affiliation were the only stumpers I could come up with.

    • Jacob Ska says:

      Howard, why did you start with 1956? The category was 21st Century Presidential Elections. Just curious.

      • Howard says:

        Good point. Because the clue mentioned “first since 1952,” I dumbly began in 1956 without looking at the category. Much easier starting with 2000 or 2004!

  4. VJ says:

    Coincidence: They had that “Give It Away” clue in “Name That Tunester” on Anthony Kiedis’ birthday

  5. Kevin Cheng says:

    Dave made that late true daily double pay off to have the lead going into FJ! Dave won and we have two mohawks in the semifinals. I wonder if we could have two mohawks playing in the same semifinal match.
