Final Jeopardy: European Authors (10-6-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/6/2015) in the category “European Authors” was:

“to explain… Harry by the artless division into wolf and man is a hopelessly childish attempt”, he wrote in 1927.

7x champ Matt Jackson rose to the top of the TOC class yesterday with his $190,601 winnings. He’s looking for an 8th win today. His opponents are looking for a first: Ernestine Gardner, from South Bend, IN; and John Kozempel, from Philadelphia, PA.

Round 1: John found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State of Emergency” under the $800 clue. He was in the lead with $4,400, $200 ahead of Matt which Alex claimed was “an unusual situation.” Not particularly true, at least in the first round. John bet $2,200 and he was RIGHT.

On March 28, 1979 a nuclear plant in this State suffered a massive core meltdown. show

John and Matt finished in a $8,000 tie for the lead. Ernestine was next $600.

Round 2: Matt found the first Daily Double in “I Am History” under the $1,600 clue. He had answered every clue except one since the round began and now had a $10,000 lead over John, who still had $8,000. Ernestine still had $600. He bet $6,000, and he was RIGHT.

In the 1940s, he needed 2 tries to become mayor of Minneapolis; 20 years later, he was Vice President. show

Matt found the last Daily Double in “These Words Could Go on a Diet” under the $800 clue. In the lead with $25,200, he had $20,800 more than John in second place. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

Meaning plump, this adjective begins with a shipboard direction. show

Matt finished in the lead with $36,800. John was next with $4,400 and Ernestine was in third place with $3,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HERMANN HESSE?

Harry Haller is the protagonist of Hermann Hesse’s 1927 novel, “Steppenwolf.” This includes the missing part of the quote in the clue: “to explain so complex a man as Harry by the artless division into wolf and man is a hopelessly childish attempt.” Hesse goes on to says that “Harry consists of a hundred or a thousand selves, not of two. His life oscillates, as everyone’s does, not merely between two poles, such as the body and the spirit, the saint and the sinner, but between thousand and thousands.” More quotes and info on Steppenwolf: An Explanation

Ernestine got it right. She bet it all and finished with $6,000.

John thought it was (Arthur Conan) Doyle. (Possibly thinking of Harry Houdini?) That cost him $1,611 and he wound up with $2,789.

Matt also got it right, putting down both names and underlining Hermann, an apparent dig at the “Turgenov” clue he got dinged on.* His $3,209 bet brought his already winning total up to $40,009 and Dalton Higbee finally gets his wish 🙂 Matt’s 8-day total is $230,610.

FJ Results: 10-6-15

*This was in the second round in the category The “I.T.” Guy, which was about people with those initials. The first clue picked in the category was this $2,000 one: “He left Russia when his 1862 novel “Fathers and Sons” outraged both radicals & conservatives.” Matt answered “Turgenov” and Alex accepted that, when Alex should have prompted him to be more specific since the players had to give the first name as well. It was very obvious that Matt was miffed! Oh, well, it would have cost him less if he hadn’t started out the category with the $2K clue.

2 years ago:: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Presidential Election History”

In 1948 he won South Carolina with 72% of the vote & 3 other states but finished a distant third overall. show

I really felt that John fell off his game when they got to the “words on a diet” category. It seemed to me to be in poor taste, considering John’s size.

I’m sure that as a mature and sensible fellow, John knows that the boards are set up before the players are assigned to these games and it had nothing to do with him. I thought he fell off his game in Double Jeopardy because by the time he was able to buzz in, Matt’s domination had turned what started out as an $8K tie into a $16,800 lead. Then to make it worse, John lost $1,600 on that Waffle House clue, by saying Denny’s.. Ernestine took a hit, too, with IHOP.

I missed the show today. I’m confused by the recap of the Turgenev incident. If Alex accepted Matt’s answer, why was Matt miffed and why did it cost him?

    • VJ says:

Matt went to the category and picked the $2K clue and gave Turgenov as the reply. Alex accepted it. Then Matt answered a $1600 clue in another category correctly and his score was $37,200 at that point. Then Alex informed him that he made an error in accepting Turgenov when because of the quotes, it had to be Ivan Turgenov so Matt’s score went down to $33,200. Matt made a face that looked miffed to me.

      Hope that explains it better.

      • Cece says:

Is it possible that he underlined “Herman” (Herman Hess) to needle Alex?

I thought it interesting that he picked the category TV first, when is not one of his strengths . He may have wanted to get rid of that category quickly?

@Dalton, would you get over here and show your enthusiasm for Matt’s $40,000 wins tonight? :):)

        • VJ says:

Well, I definitely saw it as a smart ass move. Like the time Arthur Chu lost $5K for saying Frances McDarmand instead of McDormand. LINK He was pissed and showed it by over-enunciating his responses after that.

Yeah, on the TV category, I guess he wanted to give the other players a few things to answer (as emil pointed out) before he demolished them.

        • Cece says:

Yes, thanks for that link VJ. I had forgotten that was the same game Chu also had that “gerrymandering” exchange with Alex. Coincidentally, the next day was Chu’s 12th game and his downfall.

  3. Leena says:

Well, I can’t watch jeopardy at all. I just watch clips from play jeopardy.

    • VJ says:

Sometimes, there are additional clips on the weekly recaps, Leena, in case you don’t already know that.

  4. emil says:

so if he wins 20 games, that would be about 24 more players who might as well have stayed home. I’ll pass.

He doesn’t care if they get the first two rows. Sometimes it even seems like he’s giving it to them. It’s not a lot of fun to watch.

  5. Leena says:

Wish hopefully gonna come true. I’d like him to get more than 20 games. I don’t really care about the ToC anymore. I mean I already love the contestants just in case he DOESN’T make it.
