Final Jeopardy: The Bible (10-28-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/28/2014), in the category “The Bible” was:

The first conversation recounted in the Bible is in Genesis 3 between these 2; it leads to trouble.

New champ Bill Albertini won $19,550 in yesterday’s game. Today he takes on these two players: Jenica Jessen, from Riverton, UT; and Michael Wille, from Washington, DC.

Round 1: Jenica found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Antisocial Science” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. She was in the lead with $2,000, twice as much as both Bill and Michael who were tied at $1,000. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

In 1939 Edwin Sutherland put these 2 words before “crime” to describe bad things done by high-status people. show

Jenica finished in the lead with $5,400. Bill was second with $4,200 and Michael was last with $1,800.

Round 2: Jenica found the first Daily Double in “That Started from this Tropic Port” under the $1,600 clue. She was in a second place tie with Michael. They both had $7,800, $2,800 less than Bill’s lead. She bet $3,000, and said what sounded like “the Turks and Carcinos” so that was WRONG.

Michael found the last Daily Double in “Just Sit Right Back” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $8,200, he had $2,400 less than Bill’s lead. He bet $3,000 and came up with a scythe. That was WRONG.

Bill finished in the lead with $10,600. Jenica was right on his heels with $9,600 and Michael was in third place with $5,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE EVE AND THE SERPENT?

In Genesis 3:1-5, the first conversation took place between Eve and the crafty serpent when he convinced Eve (who actually is not yet named Eve) that she will not die if she eats the fruit of the forbidden tree: “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

The second conversation is between God and Adam and Eve when the Almighty finds out what happened and delivers his sentence. God also spoke to and punished the snake who presumably slithered away on his belly pursuant to his sentence. Adam gave Eve her name in verse 20 of Genesis 3. (Bible Gateway)

Michael wrote down “Adam & Eve.” He lost his $4,800 bet and finished with $400.

Jenica had “Eve and Satan” which was accepted. She doubled up and finished with $19,200.

Bill wrote down “Eve & the serpent.” He added $8,600 to his score to finish with $19,200 and, once again, we have a tie. Bill and Jenica will be returning as co-champs tomorrow.

Bill now has a 2-day total of $38,750.
FJ Results: 10-28-14

In the chat, Jenica talked about how she picked her own first name when she was born. Every time they talked about the name she has, she stopped crying. Bill talked about the fun he has teaching Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson to his students. Alex Trebek commented that it’s fun to hear about Emerson, too, “and not understand a word he wrote”.

2 years ago:: ALL of the players got this FJ in “20th Century Books”

“A Cry of Children” & “Nightmare Island” were proposed titles for this novel. show

As a retired professor of Religion, I am distressed that the answer “Eve and Satan” was accepted. In the text the conversation is clearly between Eve and the Serpent, who in later theology is interpreted by some Christians as Satan. This is an interpretation not in the text! Therefore incorrect in my view.

I agree completely. That answer was simply incorrect. I also happen to teach the Bible as Literature, so maybe it’s only teachers of the Bible who will object to what is clearly an extratextual imposition on Genesis.

and as far as thje montgolfier is concerned: it is a chair AND a hot air balloon. most people only know it as a hot air balloon. the chair was then afterwards built in that shape and thus became a piece of furniture.louis XVI could have used a balloon though to escape the guillotine…..

Has Jeopardy always accepted the first words of a song, in place of the title? Recently it accepted (Goodbye) Ruby Tuesday in Final Jeopardy, even though I’ve seen people ruled out for minor spelling errors. Today it accepted (Somewhere) Over the Rainbow.

    • VJ says:

All I can offer you is an opinion — I am not an expert on the Jeopardy rules.

I would guess the Rainbow and Ruby Tuesday answers were accepted because the extra word for each song really is there each time the title is sung in the song, and if that’s not why, then it must be because the whole answer is there regardless of the extra word. For instance, a contestant could write down “Ruby Tuesday. Hi mom.” and that would be accepted.

The spelling thing has been explained over and over and over again. Minor spellings that don’t change the pronunciation of the answer are not ruled out.

Here is what Trebek said in this article about the ruling on the boy who spelled emancipation wrong:

“The rules are very simple. Normally we don’t penalize anybody for misspelling. I mean if he had spelled emancipation, p-a-y-s-h-u-n, we probably would have accepted it. But if you add a syllable through your spelling mistake, or delete a syllable, then the judges will rule against you.”

And he said the contestants are briefed on these rules before the show.

    • VJ says:

P.S. The first words of Ruby Tuesday are: “She would never say where she came from”. The “Goodbye Ruby Tuesday” is in the song’s refrain.

AGAIN a tie….and we thought in the CotD talk, there would be no problem, vj!

and i am somewhat surprised that they accepted “satan”.i don’t have the KJV, but in the german language bible it says (roughly translated)”the serpent was more cunning than all other animals of the field….” and nowhere in genesis 4 the serpent is called or compared with satan or the devil LITERALLY, although one can take it as implied. there was only ONE evil creature, so i guess it had to be satan, especially since satan is often identified being the serpent in the garden of eden by theologists.
i am still surprised that j accepted the “indirect” answer.they have dinged players for less.

and that’s why i would always bet it all if i were in second place and it’s not a runaway. i know many will disagree with me, but tie “offerings” become more and more frequent. why guard to secure second place when you have a possibility to share the spoils and the leader may be so inclined?you never know.
can’t remember so many tie “offers” in the past, say from 1 year back and beyond. it seems to become more and more of a trend, so you might as well try when you are second before fj.
so congratulations to both, bill and jenica. not just for the win, but also to jenica to throw it all in and to bill for letting her “in”. nice touch by both. i wonder what will happen tomorrow, IF they are again 1 and 2,regardless who is one and two. will bill offer again and/or will jenica return the favor? just to find out i would like to see them be 1 and 2 again before fj on wednesday.
