Final Jeopardy: Oscar Hyphenates (10-2-18)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/2/2018) in the category “Oscar Hyphenates” was:
This actor has never been nominated for acting– he won, though, as a writer for 1997 & as a producer for 2012.
New champ Doug Dodson, a classical singer from Boston, MA, won $16,000 yesterday. In his second game, he takes on these two players: Cory Landis, a registered nurse from New York, NY; and Kirsten Morry, a lawyer from Newfound and Labrador.
Round 1 Categories: October Observances – Sailing Into History – Portuguese Primer – Gems & Jewels – Weird Al-Chemy – At the Zoo
Cody found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “At the Zoo” under the $1,000 clue on the 4th pick of the round. He was in a tie with Doug. They both had $600 and Kirsten had not yet buzzed in. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.
This capital’s zoo was created from the personal animal collection of King William IV of Prussia. show
Cody finished in the lead with $8,600. Doug was second with $6,800 and Kirsten was last with $800.

Doug finished in the lead with $15,000. Cody was next with $12,000 and Kirsten was in third place with $2,000.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Actor-writer-producer, Ben Affleck shared the Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen Oscar with Matt Damon for the 1997 film “Good Will Hunting.” He was recognized again as one of the producers of Best Motion Picture of the Year at 85th Academy Awards for “Argo” (2012). At the time, Josh L. Dickey wrote in “Variety”: “No one’s hyphens are blinging right now quite like Ben Affleck’s, whose Hollywood dream began with a screenwriting Oscar and is being heavily re-gilded with “Argo.”
This is Ben’s first FJ! He’s had a couple of categories and here’s a clue from one of them: NO DISRESPECT TO BEN AFFLECK $400: On Kanye’s “nodisrespecttobenaffleck” hashtag, this woman, “alias” Ben’s wife, noted, “I say that all the time”
Kirsten wrote down Day-Lewis. She bet and lost it all.
Cody didn’t have a response. He lost $7,999 and finished with $4,001.
Doug wrote down “backrolls,” assuring Alex that it would go viral. He lost $9,001 bet so he won the game with $5,999. His 2-day total is $21,999.
2 triple stumper from the last round:
FRENCH ARTISTS ($1600) After seeing open warfare in the streets of Paris in 1830, Delacroix began his allegory of her “Leading the People”
AFTER THE ZOO ($2000) A traditional Japanese sandal much like a flip-flop

The 1st scene in this book: “With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene” show

I think they should go with commas, not hyphens. It gets counted as one word in online copy and can make it look like you put in a line break too early.
I suppose it could be worse, though, like if they used acronyms. The Lord knows we have enough of those as it is.
Well VJ, I didn’t know it was a noun. I guess the clue writers thought they were really fancy…. Acronyms? Even I use one as part of my email address BITMON for BeingInTheMiddleOfNowhere (after all, the nearest mainland is 5 flight hours away for me…:):):)
I would have likely been stumped at the final. I immediately thought Affleck as I knew he won for Will Hunting that year and 2012 sounded about right for Argo, both huge favorites of mine. But then I remembered it was hyphenated and started casting about for guys with hyphens in their name. I had nothing, I probably would have left it blank for fear of looking like I didn’t remember the hyphen. 🙂
I did the same exact thing. Affleck is the first person I thought of but I started thinking about actors with hyphenated surnames. Not cool.
Hyphenate: a person active in more than one field.
The real winner tonight is Alyssa Edwards. #backrolls
well, I thought that the Variety article in the recap would not only show what it is but also why show biz folks covet the status.
Anyhow, how’s this: dictionary.com
hyphenate (noun) Informal. a person working or excelling in more than one craft or occupation:
He’s a film-industry hyphenate, usually listed as a writer-director-producer.
What a horribly confusing clue !!! I thought the hyphen was in the person’s name. TERRIBLE QUESTION !!!
Totally agree. Horrible clue and I still don’t understand what was meant by the “hyphenated” part of this clue
Actor-Director-Producer
Totally agree!!
Count me in as agreed, I would have thought that the use of hyphenate in the category related to the response (in the form of a question) as Kirsten did. Would not be surprised to see them back.
Another Triple Stumper this time, on Oscar hyphenates. What does this mean, and why Kirsten’s response is wrong?
@John Christian, Kirsten took the clue to mean the correct response had a hyphenated name — but even if that was so, Daniel Day-Lewis has won 3 Best Actor Oscars so it could not be him.
Click on that Variety article I linked to in the recap. It will explain what hyphenate means in the context of the clue
Therefore her “oscar” knowledge was not too extensive either or she overlooked the line “..this actor has never been nominated for acting..”, the introduction and basis for the answer.
Any “Oscar” category becomes more and more dangerous. There are so many possibilities and twists and each year there are a bunch added with another award ceremony. W/o Google you can follow and know pretty much all about 1 or 2 actors or movies, but with all the cross-connections…??? You would need a tome like the N.Y.C. white and yellow pages combined just to cover everything about the “Oscars” ( and in very fine print, otherwise there is not enough room). This is becoming the most “dangerous ” category in J/DJ/FJ.
Ouch , another day of triple stumper today in final. But still it wasn’t Kristen’s day as the guys were gaining ground. I thought that the Oscars would have been right up Doug’s alley since Ben Affleck appeared in the night in the museum movie series which I assumed you saw right VJ? I really hope that Doug can improve his winnings a bit more if he wants to be a toc contender. Still though I don’t blame the players but I hope tomorrow’s final will get easier.
@JJ
Almost forgot, you were also right with the hyphenated name in your post on CotD (Day-Lewis……)!!!
Congratulations, JJ! We were in agreement that the way this was written would yield no correct response, even IF the players had any idea about “Oscars”.
Congrats to Doug (strange bet by Cody though) for a second win. However, a third win tomorrow will probably not get him on the ToC list since he would have to win 40.302 or more to knock Jeffrey off and that’s a tall order. Imo -sorry to say- the chances of Doug to win FOUR games are slightly below 50% imo and he might not always end up in the lead.
The clue was a real bummer, no way somebody could figure that out in 30 seconds and the hidden “for” in the clue might/could have thrown the players off by a year. J LOVES to insert those “ambiguous” facts, so you need already 15 seconds to figure out were the films from those years or the awards. Nasty, nasty, J!
Yes, congrats to you and JJ, John. I’m wondering if we’re going to have another week where there will be 3 tough FJs in a row.
I loved the Weird Al category. I put it and the J!6 clue in the extra clues list, plus another song we wished was in there
