Final Jeopardy: Names (10-19-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/19/2023) in the category “Names” was:

The name Jennifer is an alteration of this name that in early Welsh literature belonged to the “first lady of the island”

The first of four Champions Wild Card tournaments wraps up today. These three finalists made the amounts after their names in yesterday’s match: Sam Stapleton, ($15,200); Josh Saak, ($25,200); and Lucy Ricketts, ($14,200). Those amounts will be added to today’s final scores to determine the winner.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GUINEVERE?

The last time Guinevere was the answer to Final Jeopardy! was in February 2016. The clue also referred to her as “the first lady of the island.” Guinevere is most well-known as King Arthur’s queen and Sir Lancelot’s lover. She has a relatively big entry on this page with the characters from the King Arthur legend. It says her Welsh name was Gwenhwyfar, meaning the “White Phantom” and the “first lady of the island.”

Guinevere has many different spellings, but so does Jennifer, its modern counterpart. In the USA, Jennifer first entered the Top 100 popular girls’ names in 1956 at No. 97. From 1970 through 1984, it was No. 1 on that list. The name fell out of the Top 100 in 2009 and by 2022, it was No. 502.

Sam saw the futility of betting so he wrote “What happens if Josh pulls a Cliff Clavin??” Today’s $5,000 plus $15,200 from yesterday gave him $20,200. Sam won the $25,000 third prize.

Lucy got it right. Her “Guineviere” spelling was okay. Her $5,500 bet brought today’s score up to $17,100. Adding in yesterday’s $14,200 gave Lucy $31,300. She won the second place $50,000 prize.

Josh wrote down Regan, his daughter’s name. He bet nothing, winning the game with $47,200 ($22,000 plus $25,200). Josh is this tournament’s grand prize winner. He gets $100,000 and a spot in the next Tournament of Champions.

Another darn good game tonight. Props to Lucy for getting FJ. She knew she could not overtake Josh, so wagered appropriately. Too bad she fell a few $$ short. But she gets to take home $50K.

No one knew the name of a striped squirrel?

Oh, I didn’t think FJ was tough at all. And I’m not even an Arthurian scholar. I just played around with the sound for a few seconds.

Lucy did it again, which is unbelievable – not phrasing in the form of a question. I mean, how do you win Jeopardy, doing that? Well, clearly, you don’t!

I really think that the elimination of wild cards in all the tournaments is a negative. That adds some strategy, which is missing from the “one and done” way it has become.

I think Lucy thought she replied in question form. Ken gave her ample time to fix it– too much imo. I know I’d be pissed if she got it after that long pause and it cost me the game.

I can’t help thinking of all the abuse aimed at Mayim for pauses when Ken does stuff like that or worse (giving the contestant 3 chances before ruling).

Man, the audience was cheering really loud there when Josh Saak won with $47,200 even though he didn’t wager anything.

Hmmmm………A tough FJ tonight, but perhaps we’ll have better luck in tomorrow’s game.
