Final Jeopardy: 1950s Travel (1-8-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/8/2019) in the category “1950s Travel” was:

In March 1958 Hilton opened a hotel in this Western Hemisphere capital but 2-1/2 years later was out of business there

New champ Zorn Pink, a policy analyst from Ottawa, Ontario, won $7,400 yesterday. In Game 2, his opponents are: Jessica Holloway, an art education student from The Woodlands, TX; and Jeff Speiss, a hospice physician from Bay Village, OH.

Alex Trebek opened the show by joking that Zorn’s $7,400 win yesterday may not sound like a lot, but it’s worth $48,000 in Canada, following that up with “I’ve just lied to America.”

Round 1 Categories: The Old West – Animated Disney Villains – Catch Phrases – World of Water – Newspaper Names – Going Vegan

Jeff found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “World of Water” under the $600 clue on the 17th pick of the round. He was in second place with $2,600, $1,000 less than Zorn’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Water for this European capital was historically provided by the Marathon Reservoir. show

Zorn found the first Daily Double in “Very Old East” under the $1,200 clue on the 11th pick. He was in third place with $1,200 at this point, $10,800 less than Jessica’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Some 15 million years ago, what’s now this country moved away from East Asia, & the same-named sea opened in its wake show

5 clues later, Zorn found the last Daily Double in “Chapters of the Novel” under the $1,200 clue. In third place with $800, he had $11,200 less than Jessica’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance again and guessed “The Treasure of Sierra Madre”. That was WRONG.

WHAT IS HAVANA?

After Fidel Castro took over Cuba in 1959, he set about seizing American-owned businesses and other property as government property. This led the Eisenhower administration to sever all diplomatic ties with Cuba in 1961. See Cuban Embargo Pro/Con.org for more info.

If you know what happened on 1-1-59, the Final Jeopardy was a cream puff.

  2. Albert says:

I had a strange feeling that Zorn was going to get docked for dime “store” novel.

Does anybody else think Jessica looks very much like Jennifer Connelly, the actress?

    Was Zorn guessing too much?

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

Zorn Pink got karma, defeated by Jessica, who I might think would pull off a 5-game win or more. Anyway, this year’s logo for the Eurovision Song Contest seems off, pulling up a sleeve from their national final.

  4. Lou says:

I sincerely hope Jessica can win five games or more since it isn’t that often we have female streakers on the show so far. But at least everyone got final right today after that crazy triple stumper yesterday. Although zorn had some problems getting into the groove, he did fine. By the way, the abc tv show revenge is based on the book the count of Monte cristo. I hope that you might have seen it if you have netflix VJ and John?

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
Nope. Read the book a couple of times.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I hadn’t heard of that show. Thanks for telling me. Edmond Dantes is my homie and I’ll check it out when I get a chance.

Alex thought of the Corleones, too. “I know it was you, Fredo.” They have had a few clues with that line but none of them mentioned where it was said.

Two things happened in today’s game. For the first time in a while (Dec.27) we have a female champ again! The guys dominated lately. And we had a sweep after yesterday’s crash. No string again, the one day champ lost.
    CONGRATULATIONS to JESSICA.
I have to repeat my complaint though: Yet AGAIN clues (today worth 4.800) were left unplayed. One more clue and we might have had a different result, especially since only 200 separated 1st and 2nd and everybody got FJ right. Idk if there was a video category today (rephrase and shorten the clues there) or if Alex – as much as I like him – looked into the camera and paused for 10 seconds again in the interview category? If nothing else, cut out a commercial or 2 and you can easily – everything combined – save 90 seconds or more. J should finally find a way to play all clues, it IS possible!

    • Albert says:

I like when some of the clues are left unplayed. That adds to the strategy of the game. The only time I hate unplayed clues is when “ART” clues are left on the board because I love the “ART” category.

      • John B./I. says:

        @Albert
What strategy would that be? The players don’t know beforehand whether clues will be left. Besides, regardless of the category it’s unfair to the PLAYERS who actually are in that particular game. At least that’s my opinion.

        • Albert says:

Actually there is a strategy to unplayed clues. If I were on the show I would purposely slow things down if “Hip Hop” were a category in Double Jeopardy so that fewer “Hip Hop” clues got played at the end. I would pick things such as The Civil War, Old Movies, Art, World Capitals, etc… and take my time answering so that hopefully a bad category for me would not even be reached. A little sly and maybe marginally unethical, but still a good strategy, imo.

      • VJ says:

ha ha, Albert, I hate unplayed clues in “Poetry”

idk why it happens. Today that one clue in Art & Mythology about Apollo and the laurel tree was really long (almost 3 clues worth, I thought). But other clues were short so it should balance out. And there were very few triple stumpers. .

        • Albert says:

I noticed that also. Poetry is a weak category for most people so that category is usually left for the end. Also, most people just don’t like poetry.

    • Howard says:

Five shows are taped per day, twice a week. So if Jonathan’s four wins were on Tues thru Fri, then they likely were the final 4 of that day. They tape 3, take a break, change audiences, and tape two more. Therefore Jonathan’s Monday loss came on the following day, or the first taping of the next week. I was on “Split Second” in 1974 and won the last two shows that night. I had a 6-day wait between tapings and was a nervous wreck knowing I’d be on the first show. They put the two best contenders on against me and I lost a close battle. (I also was on “Jeopardy!” but that’s a story for another time.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

I bet she can win five or more.
