Gettable but tough FJ that eluded me. I thought Allison might bet either $6001 or go all-in, but I see what she did. She knew Mark would bet $4401 or more and have to miss, so she wagered $2001 to lock out Kevin if both got FJ. A very wise wager that could have won her the game.
IMO much easier boards tonight than the last two. But my goodness, no one could deduce the big HR gamblers, the word derived from nephew, amps x volts, or the “ball” drink? (My parents used to use that word when they’d make a very occasional drink.) The 200 lbs/14.29 these wasn’t tough. And I thought Allison could take the “fifth” part of that DD clue and incorporate the Greek equivalent into the needed word. The only DD I could answer today.
It was a nice competitive game, but that FJ was another bummer. I mean, I don’t speak Russian, but from what I could extract from the clues, I also went with Newport. Well, perhaps we’ll strike some oil in next week’s games.
Other than Wednesday, this was just a really hard week. Only 3 right, and all 3 came from Wednesday’s Quarter-Final game. I’m sure the Semi-Finals and The Finals will be exciting to watch after next Monday’s final Quarter-Final game ends, but next week has got to be better than this week.
It’s fun to be able to win a TofC game just on the Triple Stumpers(including the Etymology DD that was missed in the Million DOllar Masters final game one by Eric Newhouse, Bob Verini, and Brad Rutter in 2002) and a wager of $4800 or more in FJ!
We end the week with another triple stumper due to that pesky geography clue. When was the last time that we got four triple stumpers in one week?
I think that was the week of April 3rd-7th, 2023. That was when we saw Brian Henegar. In his 1st game, he provided the only correct response of the week, as well as the only time he got FJ! right when he was on. I was hoping that would change when Brian returned for the 2024 TOC. Nope. It never changed.
You are right about that week, William. I added the link to the weekly recap of the final clues. I’m not sure if we can say it was worse than this week because I don’t think it’s unfair to expect better in the ToC.
This has been a hard week this week. 4 triple stumpers in one week. Wednesday was the only day this week that there were correct responses and that’s when everyone knew the FJ!
