Final Jeopardy: Names in History (1-30-24)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/30/2024) in the category “Names in History” was:

The scientific name of Jamaica’s ackee fruit honors this captain who brought it to England in 1793

Today’s Champions Wild Card contestants are: Juveria Zaheer, a psychiatrist from Whitby, Ontario, Canada; Alec Chao, a management & program analyst orig. from Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Robbi Ramirez, a writer from Orlando, FL.

Round 1 Categories: Van Halen – Hot for Creature – Colleges & Universities – Chains – 4-Letter Interjections – Harlem Hellfighters

Juveria found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “College & Universities” under the $600 clue on the 4th pick of the round. She was back at $0 after just getting out of the red. Alec had the lead with $800. Juveria bet $1,000 and thought it was the Univ. of North Carolina. That was WRONG (and she was back in the red).

The land donated to start this ACC sports powerhouse was home to the estate of John C. Calhoun show

Juveria finished in the lead with $7,400. Robbi was in second place with $1,600. Alec was last with $1,200. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Pope Fiction – First Name’s the Same – Television – Engineering – Around the World – Starts with Soft “G”

Robbi found the first Daily Double in “Starts with Soft ‘G’” under the $1,600 clue on the 18th pick of the round. He was in second place with $8,400, $8,600 less than Juveria’s lead. Robbi made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT, and only $200 off the lead.

In part this herb’s name is from the Chinese for “human being” & its roots make it look like one show

Robbi got the last Daily Double in “Pope Fiction” under the $800 clue with 6 clues left after it. He was in second place with $17,600, $200 more than Juveria in second place. Robbi bet $4,600 and he was RIGHT, and in the lead.

Robbi finished in the lead with $22,600. Juveria was in second place with $18,200. Alec was last with $10,000. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS WILLIAM BLIGH?

The Office of the Prime Minister of Jamaica has a section devoted to the national symbols of Jamaica. The national fruit page say the ackee (Blighia Sapida) originally came to Jamaica from West Africa. The fruit’s name evolved from “Ankye”, its name in the Twi language of Ghana. The botanical name was chosen to honor Captain William Bligh, whose name is most famously associated with mutiny. However, Bligh is the guy who brought the ackee to England in 1793.

There’s a lot of other info about the ackee. It is part of the country’s national dish, ackee and codfish. Bligh bringing the first breadfruit to Jamaica is also noted. You may recall that breadfruits and Bligh came up a year ago in Final Jeopardy!

Alec got it right. He bet $10,000 and finished with $20,000.

Juveria got it, too. She bet $7,000 and finished with $25,200.

Robbi went with Captain Cook. He lost $14,000 and finished with $8,600. So it looked a little sketchy for a while, but Juveria advances to the finals after all.

Pretty good game, thanks to that daring DD wager. Final had me stumped, so I guessed Cook. Re the first DD, I knew Calhoun was from South, not North, Carolina, but was not sure if they wanted original ACC member U of SC, or maybe Clemson.

    Knew the Owls school.

Juveria rocks. So smart, so poised. I look forward to seeing her again.

  2. Jason says:

Juveria did well for herself. I got FJ easily, because I lived in St Vincent, in the Caribbean, and one of the descendant plants of Capt Bligh’s breadfruit original is in the arboretum there!

I didn’t even notice when Robbi rang in the first time. As for Capt Cook, he was killed in Hawai’i in the 1770s.

  3. David says:

The correct answer to the first daily double is Clemson, not the University of South Carolina. Ken got it right on the show.

  4. Rick says:

I did well in the game, and the FJ was a cinch.

  5. John says:

Problem is with the first daily double is…the University of South Carolina isn’t in the ACC it’s in the SEC.

    • John says:

Well, just looked it up and U of SC used to be in and helped found the ACC.

      • A says:

That’s hugely misleading. I went with Clemson being that they are in Calhoun’s home state and an ACC powerhouse. SC hasn’t been in the ACC in over 50 years. A major faux pas on allowing that question into the game.

  6. Kevin Cheng says:

Juveria becomes the first player after winning Second Chance to advance to the finals since Jilana Cotter did in the Champions Wildcard Seasons 37 and 38.
