NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER & WILD BILL HICKOK?

1876 June 25, Montana: General Custer perished at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Custer, who was well known for his long blond ringlets, liked to wear buckskin coats when he was in the West and owned several. After his death, his widow donated one of her husband’s buckskin coats to the Smithsonian. They say it is the one Custer wore when he was Lieutenant Colonel with the 7th U. S. Cavalry in the Dakotas.

1876 August 2, South Dakota: Wild Bill Hickok was murdered by Jack McCall at Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon in Deadwood, where he was playing poker and holding the cards that came to be known as “the dead man’s hand”: a pair of black aces and a pair of black eights. Like Custer, Wild Bill wore his hair long, although he is said to have been a redhead. As a folk hero of the Old West, Wild Bill is far more associated with buckskin clothing than General Custer was.

Erica wrote down “Wild Bill and Sitting Bull” (Sitting Bull died in 1890). She lost her $6,950 bet and finished with $50.

Alex wrote down General Custard (probably not acceptable) and Sitting Bull. That cost him $15,000 and left him with $600.

Brian had “Hickock & Crockett.” (Crockett died 40 years earlier at the Alamo.) Brian didn’t bet a buffalo nickel. He added $16,600 to his winnings for a 7-day total of $163,904.

Final Jeopardy (1/27/2021) Brian Chang, Alex Cohn, Erica Holencik

A triple stumper from each round:

BOOKS BY PRESIDENTS ($400) “A Time to Heal”

CORSICAN ($2000) Pasquale Paoli fought the Genoese & French, but during a 1794-96 British occupation, he offered the island to this king

Custer did not have long hair at the battle and he was a LT Colonel at that time.

    • VJ says:

The clue did not say he had long hair at the battle. It just said he was known for his long flowing hair. In the recap, it is mentioned that Custer was a Lt. Colonel with the 7th U. S. Cavalry. That info helped me get this question right later that same day on Master Minds (that Ken Jennings did not get!)

      (5) HISTORY: In his “Last Stand” at the Battle of Little Big Horn, George Custer held what Army rank?
      (a) Lieutenant Colonel (b) Major General (c) Staff Sergeant

  2. Howard says:

I too was wondering if they’d accept Custard if it had been part of a correct answer. They don’t penalize for spelling, and there were no extra syllables which usually force a disqualification.
I guessed Hickok right away, then remembered that Custer’s last stand was in Montana.
Coincidentally, way back in college days, there was a guy on our dorm floor named Dave Hickok, and we called him General Custer because of his long blond hair and wispy beard.

    • VJ says:

Howard, I can’t see how they could accept Custard for Custer, particularly now that I have found out that there was at least one person named George Custard who probably read about Custer’s demise in the newspaper. To accept Custard would be totally inconsistent with their Barry Gordy ruling.

  3. Robert says:

Just a poor Final Jeopardy question.

  4. rhonda says:

    General Custard, I like that.
Reminds me of Colonel Mustard lol.

  5. DC says:

So, for J historians, when was the last time we had 2 “returning champions” as we will with Brian and Zach (not counting co-champions who tied in a previous game before the rules changed)?

    • William Weyser says:

That would be on January 18th, 2016. The Co-Champions were Mike Drummond & Claudia Corriere, who returned, after she got a job offer that she couldn’t refuse, and if you’ve seen that episode, you may remember the ending of that episode.

  6. DC says:

Well done with the “didn’t bet a buffalo nickel” humor VJ! Last week it was “didn’t have to bet a farthing”. Both apropos to the topic.

    • VJ says:

Thanks, DC. It’s not very often that I can work that in but I love it when I can!

As for 2 returning champs, I think the last time there were 2 champs was when 4x champ Ryan Fenster was brought back on July 17, 2018. Like what is happening tomorrow, there was no tied game involved. They just brought Ryan back because they messed up on a clue in his 2-2-18 game

  7. Ismael Gomez says:

We end this episode with a triple stumper since today’s Final isn’t nice to anyone.

  8. Jeopardy! lover says:

This will be epic competition! Congrats on your 7th consecutive win, Brian! We’ll see if you or Zach will win or even the challenger.

  9. Lou says:

Well who will be winning tomorrow, will it be Brian Chang or Zach newkirk? The question is will Zach be able to get all the daily doubles hopefully?

Great to see Brian winning game 7.

  10. William Weyser says:

This means that what we feared might happen tomorrow is going to happen tomorrow. Brian Chang plays against Zach Newkirk. So now, the only question is… who prevails tomorrow? 1 of the 2 Co-Champions, or our solo challenger. We’ll answer that tomorrow.

  11. Kevin Cheng says:

So tomorrow it will be Brian playing against a 4 time champion Zach to pick up where he left off in season 36 finale. It will be the first time having 2 co-champs against one new player similar to January 2016.
