Final Jeopardy: The Emmys (1-27-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/27/2016) in the category “The Emmys” was:

It’s the first show nominated for both Outstanding Comedy Series (2014) & Outstanding Drama Series (2015).

3x champ Fred Vaughn already has $49,600 to his credit as he goes for a 4th win. His challengers today are: Bianca Hegedus, from Huntingdon Valley, PA; and Colin West, from Port Jefferson, NY.

Round 1 Categories: It Borders Austria – Air Quotes – Skillful Adjectives – Technology – Pro Women – “Con” Men

Bianca found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Air Quotes” under the $800 clue with 6 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $3,600, $1,600 more than Colin in second place. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Bianca finished in the lead with $4,600. Colin was second with $2,600 and Fred was last with $2,200.

Round 2 Categories: “Z” Words – Zoology – Pop Music – Influential Nonfiction – 19th Century America – Mixed Bag

Colin found the first Daily Double in “19th Century America” under the $1,600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. In second place with $4,200, he had $1,600 less than Bianca’s lead. He bet $2,200 and thought it was the Land Bureau. That was WRONG.

In 1890 this Bureau of the Government reported that the West was so settled that no frontier could be said to exist. show

Fred found the last Daily Double in “Z Words” under the $2,000 clue. There were still 2 whole categories and a couple of $2,000 clues still up there. He was in the lead with $8,200 now, $2,200 more than Colin in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Colin finished in the lead with $11,200. Fred was next with $10,600 and Bianca was in third place with $7,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK”?

“2015 was the second time that “Orange Is the New Black” competed at the Emmys, but the second time “the show was classified as a drama series. The drama category is a tougher race than the comedy category, and Orange Is the New Black was up against really stiff competition like Game of Thrones (which won), House of Cards, and Mad Men. … You may have been wondering why the change from comedy to drama was made at all, so here’s some clarification. Back in February, the TV Academy adopted a new set of rules. These (arbitrary-sounding) rules state that only 30-minute series are considered comedies. Everything else, including Orange Is the New Black, is a drama.” (Popsugar)

Bianca got it right. Her $4,201 bet brought her up to $11,201.

Fred also got it. He bet $5,500 bet and finished with $16,100.

Colin was shaking his head negatively the whole time he was writing down “Veep.” He lost his $10,200 bet so he landed in third place with $1,000.

And, at last, the spell is broken. We have a 4x champ! Fred Vaughn’s 4-day total is $65,700.

A “19th Century America” Triple Stumper: Nobody got this $2,000 clue: “This American naval hero wasn’t killed in the Illinois City that bears his surname, but rather in a duel in Maryland.” Fred rang in on it but ran out of time to answer.

The other triple stumper in that category was the $1,200 clue about the Credit Mobilier Scandal and the “oceanic” railroad company that was involved in it

just corrected my Mexican rebels of the 190s mistake to “Mexican rebels of the 1910s” on that Z Words DD.

@Jacob, J-Archive shows 2 regular clues and one FJ for this show in 2015.

Thanks vj. Btw, every time Fred picks a clue I think about you and your frustration with Alex Jacob taking forever, it seemed, to select a clue. Fred pauses, then sounds like he’s exhausted when he selects a clue but always win…so far!

      • VJ says:

Well, Alex Jacob took his sweet time answering the clue more than picking the next category. I always thought he was mentally counting the seconds. LOL.

Fred and his huge sighs before picking the clues — gawd – it’s like everytime he sees the board it’s the first time. I don’t think he is stalling around though — when he knows the answer he just gives it.

PS – was very surprised no one got that Toynbee clue in nonfiction. – made me start singing don’t know much about history. LOL!

    Congrats Fred!

@Cece, I’m beginning to feel like you on Final Jeopardy clues. Repetition repetition repetition. There was a clue one year ago I think that was a final Jeopardy clue on OITNB although the wording was different.

    • Cece says:

The clue was 6 months ago. It surprised me to learn, though, that the show is also considered a comedy [gasp!] (I never saw the show). You said it yesterday—the writers are just lazy! Recycling clues is easier than creating new ones.

Yeah, Fred pauses….I go get a snack, Fred pauses….I text someone, Fred pauses….I go to the, never mind! And I never miss the clues he picks. :):)
