Final Jeopardy: African Countries (1-12-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/12/2018) in the category “African Countries” was:

With more than 90 million people it’s Africa’s third most populous country, though it’s more than 90% desert.

2x champ Gilbert Collins has now won $22,798. In his third game, he goes up against these two players: Alisha Mathalikunnel, from Alhambra, CA; and Alex Cook, from Saint Paul, MN.

Round 1 Categories: January – Pop Culture Gold & Silver – It’s Raining “Men” – Mummy Dearest – Oregon – So You’ve Been Indicted

Alex found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Mummy Dearest” under the $1,000 clue on the 15th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,600, $1,200 more than Gilbert in second place. He bet $2,000 but drew a blank so he was WRONG.

Gilbert found the last Daily Double in “Poetry” under the $1,200 clue on the 14th pick. In the lead with $6,600, he had $1,300 more than Alex in second place. He bet $3,000 and only got half, so that was WRONG.

Gilbert finished in the lead with $10,800. Alex was next with $6,900 and Alisha was in third place with $2,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS EGYPT?

According the CIA World Factbook,
“Egypt is the most populous country in the Arab world and the third most populous country in Africa, behind Nigeria and Ethiopia.” Their estimate of Egypt’s population stands at 97,041,072 as of July 2017. It is noted in the Geography section that “approximately 95% of the population lives within 20 km of the Nile River and its delta; vast areas of the country remain sparsely populated or uninhabited.”

Alisha thought it was Morocco (No. 11). She lost her $2,000 bet, leaving her with $800.

Alex got it right. He bet $3,901, bringing him up to $10,801.

Gilbert got it right, too. He bet $3,001 so he won his third game with $13,801. His 3-day total is $36,599, “which means you owe your 2 children $366 in commission,” Alex Trebek said. During the chat, Gilbert revealed that he promised his kids, Timmy & Nicky, that he would supplement their allowances with 1% of whatever he won on Jeopardy! You’re cleaning up, kids!

Saturday’s not a new episode, but it’s a repeat episode.

African countries are very popular this week.

  3. Louis says:

Looks like Gilbert is building up his win. Also Egypt has the great pyramids of Giza although the Sahara desert covers about one fourth of the desert in Africa,.is that true VJ? There is the Nile river and the sphinx that are great tourist destinations. Plus are Nigeria and Gabon part of the Sahara desert regions?

    • VJ says:

Watch that little video up there, Lou, and you’ll find the answers to your questions and more.

I think Gilbert was showing his playful side today, with a sad look when it came time to reveal his FJ response and bet. But Trebek knew he had it right or he would have said “Gilbert isn’t looking happy.” Anyhow, Go! Gilbert! We want your kids to win a lot more.

I really liked some of the category titles, like Mummy Dearest and the Indicted one (I just wished that one was about criminals, maybe dumb criminals, not crimes)

Does this mean Gilbert has 2 sons?

    • VJ says:

Yes, I would not have spelled the names that way if I had not seen the boys’ given names on a bio for Gilbert, where it also says he speaks 5 languages! Maybe Alex will bring that up tomorrow.
