Rest in Peace: Queen Elizabeth II, Age 96

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch, passed away at age 96 on September 8, 2022. According to reports, the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

The Queen ascended to the throne in February 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI. The Queen reigned for 70 years through 15 prime ministers, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss, whom she just appointed on September 6th.

The Queen’s eldest son and heir to the throne is now King Charles III and his wife, Camilla, is Queen Consort. In a statement, the 73-year-old monarch eulogized his mother: ““We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” adding that he and his family will find great comfort in “our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.”
