Dances with Wolves: 1990 Best Picture

The 63rd Academy Awards was one of those times that one picture scooped up far more Oscars than any other, and that one picture was “Dances with Wolves”, winning Best Picture and Best Director (Kevin Costner), and 5 other awards. But it did not win in any of the acting categories.

Jeremy Irons won Best Actor for his portrayal of Claus Von Bulow in “Reversal of Fortune”. Kathy Bates won Best Actress as Annie Wilkes in “Misery”. Joe Pesci picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for being a wiseguy in “Goodfellas”, and Whoopi Goldberg got the Best Supporting Actress Oscar as a reluctant medium in “Ghost”.

Other winners included “Dick Tracy”, “American Dream”, “Creature Comforts”, “Cyrano de Bergerac”, “Days of Waiting”, “The Hunt for Red October”, “Journey of Hope”, “The Lunch Date” and “Total Recall”.

“Ghost” was the top box office hit of the year. “Home Alone” and “Pretty Woman” came in ahead of “Dances with Wolves”. “Back to the Future Part III”, “Die Hard 2”, “Presumed Innocent”, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Kindergarten Cop” didn’t do too shabby either.

The sequels kept on comin’ with “The Godfather III”, “Rocky V”, “Predator 2”, “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” and The Exorcist III, and several others.

Even more 1990 films: “Edward Scissorhands”, “The Freshman”, “La Femme Nikita”, “Jacob’s Ladder”, “Flatliners”, “The Bonfire of the Vanities.”
