Beat Shazam Recap: July 8, 2019

After a week off, Beat Shazam is back with the 6th episode of season 3. Let’s join host Jamie Foxx and deejay Corinne for another great hour of the biggest song hits (“from R.E.M. to RunDMC, from ELO to Notorious B.I.G.”).

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Kourtney & Joe, newlyweds from Providence in The Ocean State (RI)
  • Michael & Matt, from Mt. Juliet in the Volunteer State (TN). They make legal moonshine and brought a jug for Jamie
  • Felicia, from Houston, TX & Musa from Los Angeles, (CalTex). They are the Batman & Robin of music trivia

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READTNG. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. HIP-HOP: “Party Like a Rockstar” (Shop Boyz)
RI $0 TN $0 CalTex $0
Everyone picked “Laffy Taffy”
2. OLDIES: “Devil with a Blue Dress On” (Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels)
RI $0 TN $2000 CalTex $0
TN got it, the only team under 3 seconds
3. DISCO: “If I Can’t Have You” (Yvonne Elliman)
RI $2000 TN $2000 CalTex $0

4. PARTY SONGS: “Just Dance” (Lady Gaga Ft. Colby O’Donis)

5. FAST TRACK – SOUTHERN ROCK: “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” (The Georgia Satellites)
RI $2000 TN $8000 CalTex $0
TN had the only right title. No surprise there

Michael & Matt (TN) took a big lead on the Fast Track song. The other teams have some catching up to do.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Two votes went to the ’90s, so the ’60s were out.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “Barbie Girl” (Aqua)
RI $2000 TN $11,000 CalTex $0
Everyone got it, but TN was super speedy at 1.18
2. “Machinehead” (Bush)
RI $2000 TN $11,000 CalTex $3000
CalTex got on the board with the only correct title
3. “How Do I Live” (Leann Rimes)
RI $2000 TN $14,000 CalTex $3000
Everyone got it but TN came in fastest at 1.22. Them boys are hard to beat
4. FAST TRACK: “Gangsta’s Paradise” (Coolio)
RI $8000 TN $14,000 CalTex $3000
Everyone got it again. This time, Team RI took the honors at 1.51

So it was time to say sayonara to Felicia & Musa (CalTex). The rest of the game will be between Michael & Matt (TN) who have a big lead over Kourtney & Joe (RI). We all know that don’t mean nothing at this stage of the game because– the money is going UP!

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice this week is: Pop
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” (Usher)
RI $13,000 TN $14,000
RI won it at 2.37 to 5.08 for TN. With that opening volley, they shot right up to $1,000 less than TN
2. “Everybody” (Backstreet’s Back) – (Backstreet Boys)
RI $13,000 TN $19,000
That one went to TN at 1.60 to 2.69 for RI
3. “What You Waiting For” (Gwen Stefani)
RI $18,000 TN $19,000
RI got it with the only correct title
4. FAST TRACK: “Jump (For My Love)” (The Pointer Sisters)
RI $18,000 TN $29,000
TN had the correct title. RI went with “Hold Me”

There was some see-sawing in that round with Kourtney & Joe (RI) coming close to Michael & Matt (TN) a couple of times, but that Fast Track win gave the boys from Tennessee a big leg up. On to the tough stuff.

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Smoke on the Water” (Deep Purple)
RI $28,000 TN $29,000
RI had the correct response. TN chose “Born to be Wild”
2. “Sexy and I Know It” (LMFAO)
RI $38,000 TN $29,000
RI got the only right title again! TN had “Rock Your Body”
3. “Kiss Me” (Sixpence None the Richer)
RI $48,000 TN $29,000
RI is in the groove once again with the only right title. TN had “Torn”
4. FAST TRACK: “Love Rollercoaster” (Ohio Players)
RI $48,000 TN $49,000
TN came back for the win with the only correct title. RI had “Jungle Boogie”

That was a very fitting song to end that round. It was quite a rollercoaster. Kourtney & Joe (RI) did so well that, even though they are going home, they are taking $24,000 with them. Good work, guys! Michael & Matt (TN) are going on to match wits with Shazam, in the round with the million dollar potential.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. ’80s: “Heaven” (Bryan Adams) – Michael scored! Matt knew it because Jason Aldean covered it – $74,000
2. Maroon 5: “Payphone” – Michael nailed that one, too – $99,000
3. Breakup Songs: “It’s Too Late (Carole King)” – Cha ching! Another hit – $124,000
4. Rap: “Holidae In” (Chingy ft. Ludacris & Snoop Dogg) – Another ringer – $149,000
5. Country: “Queen of Hearts” (Juice Newton) – No way they weren’t getting this one. They began the round with $49,000 and finished with $174,000.

That was a perfect round for Michael & Matt and they are now entitled to take on Shazam for ONE MILLION DOLLARS. They don’t have to. They can take the $174,000 they already won and mosey on home. If they play Shazam and lose, it will cost them half their money and they will be left with $87,000. As always, Jamie gave them the category to help them decide: Motown. They chose to take up the final challenge. Matt heard this lyric “We’ll only end up hating the child we” and guessed “If I Can’t Have You”. Unfortunately, that song was in the Shazam Shuffle. This one was “Love Child” by Diana Ross & the Supremes.

That was a tough break and you could see that Michael was under a lot of pressure, as anyone would be playing for that much money while risking close to $100K at the same time. But Michael and Matt still played a great game and came away with $87,000 to show for it and that’s nothing to sneeze at. Hats off to you both!
