Beat Shazam Holiday Special Recap (12- 9-2019)

Here’s a recap of the Beat Shazam Holiday Special that aired on December 9, 2019. It was called “Santa Jamie” and host Jamie Foxx had on his Christmas red leather jacket. His deejay daughter, Corinne Marie, was in the holiday spirit in red, too.

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Curtis & Chaise, a father & daughter from Denison in the Lone Star State, who are also best friends (TX)
  • Nick & Laura, cousins from Long Island, who are more like brother & sister (NY)
  • Justin & Derick, military deejays from Fort Meade in the Old Line State (MD)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. SOUL: “This Christmas” (Donny Hathaway)
TX $0 NY $2000 MD $0
Everyone got it. Team NY got it at 2.29, the only team under 3 seconds
2. PARTY SONGS: “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” (C+C Music Factory)
TX $0 NY $4000 MD $0
This was between NY and MD. Team NY struck again at a very speedy 1.75
3. U2: “New Year’s Day”
TX $2000 NY $4000 MD $0
Team TX got it with the only correct answer
4. LOVE SONGS: “You Belong With Me” (Taylor Swift)
TX $2000 NY $6000 MD $0
It was between NY & MD again and NY scooped it up again at 2.01
5. LATIN HITS – “Feliz Navidad” (Jose Feliciano)
TX $2000 NY $10,000 MD $0
Everybody knows this one and, naturally, all the teams got it. NY got it in 1.54 vs. 2.11 for TX & MD.

Nick & Laura (NY) had quite a round and are leading with a big $10K. Curtis & Chaise (TX) managed to snag one song for $2K. Justin & Derick still need to get on the board.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Two votes from NY & MD went to ROCK & ROLL HoF so there was no vote on R&B.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “Johnny B. Goode” (Chuck Berry)
TX $5000 NY $10,000 MD $0
After NY went with “You Never Can Tell”, it was between TX and MD. TX prevailed, coming in 1.66 vs. 1.89. Whoo!
2. “Dancing in the Dark” (Bruce Springsteen)
TX $5000 NY $13,000 MD $0)
It was between TX and NY this time and NY was the only team that came in under 2 seconds. MD went with “I’m On Fire” and Jamie said it meant they were going down in flames. OMG!
3. “Blue Christmas” (Elvis Presley)
TX $5000 NY $16,000 MD $0
NY had the only right song title
4. FAST TRACK: “I Want You to Want Me” (Cheap Trick)
TX $5,000 NY $22,000 MD $0
NY and MD had the right title. TX had “Dream Police”. NY took it at 2.16 to 2.73.

That was the last chance that Justin & Derick (MD) had to not only get on the board but stay in the game, and no one can say they didn’t give it their best shot! At $5000, Curtis & Chaise have to see what they can do to close that $17,000 gap between them and the Long Island juggernaut that is Nick & Laura.

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice this week is: HOLIDAY HITS
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Christmas Time in Hollis” (Run DMC)
TX $5,000 NY $22,000
Nobody got it. TX had “Rap Your Presents” and NY had “Who’s House? Santa’s House”
2. “Sleigh Ride” (The Ronettes)
TX $5000 NY $22,000
No one got this one either. Both teams had “Frosty the Snowman”. (The Ronettes sing that one too on the “A Christmas Present to You from Phil Specter” album)
3. “Wonderful Christmastime” (Paul McCartney)
TX $11,000 NY $27,000
Ah! Both teams got this fab holiday tune from one of the Fab Four. NY took the money, coming in at 2.24.
4. FAST TRACK: “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” (Jackson 5)
TX $5000 NY $37,000
TX got it at 2.50 and NY got it at 2.37. Holy cow! NY is hard to beat!

Nick & Laura (NY) deposited another $15K in their bank and that gave them a $22K lead over Curtis & Chaise (TX), still at $5K. There’s a lot of money at stake in the next round, so let’s see where it ends up.

Round 4: Without Words
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “All the Small Things” (blink-182)
TX $5000 NY $37,000
Nobody got it. Uh, yeah, Without Words is no joke
2. “Jingle Bell Rock” (Bobby Helms)
TX $15,000 NY $37,000
Everyone got it and they got it fast! TX got a much-needed cash infusion at 1.10 vs. 1.21.
3. “Tubthumping” (Chumbawamba)
TX $15,000 NY $47,000
NY had the correct title. TX had “Ring of Fire”
4. FAST TRACK: “More Today Than Yesterday” (Spiral Starecase)
TX $15,000 NY $67,000
Both teams got it right. NY was fastest at 2.80

Curtis & Chaise (TX) are taking home $7,500, half their bank. Nick & Laura won the right to move forward to the next round to make some more cash and, possibly, get a shot at a million bucks.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right
1. DANCE HITS: “Good Vibrations” (Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch ft. Loleatta Holloway) – Oops! Blanked out on the first one. Sidenote: Good thing they don’t have to name the artist(s). Just sayin’
2. ROCK: “Sail” (AWOLNATION) Nick was on top of it – $92,000
3. SEXY SONGS: “Santa, Baby” (Eartha Kitt) – Laura got that one right away – $117,000
4. BEE GEES: “How Deep Is Your Love” – Nick nailed another one – $142,000
5. BREAKUP SONGS: “Apologize” (Timbaland ft. OneRepublic) – Another blank out. They began the round with $67,000 and finished with $142,000.

Nick & Laura lost their shot at the million but they can still double their money, if they so choose. If they play this last song and they are right, they will win $284,000. If they don’t get it right, they will lose half their money and will be left with $71,000. Jamie told them the last category was CLASSIC ROCK to help them decide. Nick and Laura were happy with the $142,000 and didn’t want to risk losing half of it. They played the last song for fun. Nick thought it was by Billy Joel and the title was “Paradise” but it was “Two Tickets to Paradise” by Eddie Money.

Congrats to Nick & Laura. What a fantastic game you played and we’re glad you decided to walk. We hate to see anyone lose half their bank!
