WHAT IS A PERISCOPE?

In “Not your grandfather’s submarine periscope,” John Keller writes: “We’ve all seen the movies — Run Silent, Run Deep; Das Boot; U-571, and others — in which the submarine captain orders “up periscope,” a big tube rises, the captain quickly unfolds a pair of handles, swivels his hat backwards, and looks through eyepieces…. While this makes for enjoyable movies, rest assured it’s in the ancient past and getting father in the rear-view mirror all the time. Today’s optical devices that enable submerged submarines to see what’s on the surface are far more advanced…. In fact, they’re not even called periscopes anymore. On the U.S. Navy’s most advanced submarines today, these optical devices are called photonics masts.”

Kimberly got it right. She bet $5,399 and finished with $10,799.

Ani thought it was radar. He lost $7,201, and was left with $799.

Jamie wrote down antenna, crossed that out and went with searchlight. He only bet $801. He won his second match with the remaining $14,399 and has a 2-day total of $29,899.

I’m hoping another teachers tournament winner will be a lady.

I can see that Jamie’s playing style is similar to Buzzy cohen in a way with making modest bets. If only seth wilson made a bigger bet he would have won his 13th game. Don’t you agree, VJ? Also I can see that Jamie’s brave enough to bet low to keep winning but he has to at least get a final jeopardy question right though? he made a smart move yesterday, didn’t he?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, idk about Buzzy, this is reminding me of the more recent matches with Abigail. Wasn’t she lucky with a low bet in one match, when she didn get FJ? Then the next day when she got FJ right, her low bet cost her the match! I hope that doesn’t happen to Jamie.

      • Lou says:

Ah yes that i remember, but I agree with you. I hope Jamie keeps winning to maintain a runaway lead. Just hope he doesn’t bet too much in tomorrow’s match because there have been players that have been throwing their chances of winning more than 3 games over the past few weeks with low bets. What makes those guys giving up so easily after just 2 games? low blood sugar or nervousness?

        • VJ says:

I don’t think they give up myself. In Abigail’s last game, I think she didn’t have a lot of confidence in her sports knowledge and just thought playing it safe was the best move.

How many times have we seen it happen on DDs near the end of the game? Players don’t want to risk a lot of their lead and then, like Jamie today, get a super easy clue that they could have locked the game up with.

Probably more than the opposite scenario where they go for it on a category they’re confident in and get a curveball.

Interesting. The males got fj incorrect & the female got it correct.

VJ, what have I consistently said about stay at home moms on Jeopardy? Bingo.

    • VJ says:

True, Jacob. You have always said so and I was actually thinking about that this morning when I was projecting (to myself) a win for Ani. I thought but as Jacob says, we have to watch out for the stay-at-home moms.

I wonder if Kimberly ever made rock cornish hens, though. The last time I did, I was trying out a new glaze. I came home with a pint of bourbon, much to my daughter’s shock since I don’t drink bourbon.
