American Idol Top 3 Recap and Prediction: Judges Want an All-Male Finale
On the May 16 Top 3 Performance Night, the Top 3 – Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillps – sang 3 songs each. One was picked by the judges, one they picked themselves and the last one was picked by Jimmy Iovine. Here’s how it went:
Joshua Ledet:
Randy Jackson picked Etta James “I’d Rather Go Blind.” Joshua picked John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Jimmy Iovine picked Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.”
Our favorite was Joshua’s pick. He got high marks for every number, particularly from Randy who would just not shut up, but his highest compliment came on Jimmy Iovine’s pick. Randy endorsed Joshua, saying people should vote for him and that he laid everything down on the stage that could have been put down there.
Jessica Sanchez:
Jennifer Lopez picked Mariah Carey’s “My All.” Jessica picked “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith and it sure seemed like Jimmy Iovine tried to throw Jessica under the bus with Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There.”
Jessica got her highest praise on the first song, but her highest compliment came when Steven Tyler gave her a lone standing ovation for doing his song and said “You just made a great song even greater…” Randy unfairly said that the Jimmy Iovine pick didn’t provide a real moment. Up yours, Randy, take that up with Jimmy.
Phillip Phillips:
The judges picked “Beggin.'” Without rapping, and with the slow entry into the song, it’s more Frankie Valli than Madcon, ain’t it? Phillip picked “Disease” by Matchbox 20 and Jimmy Iovine picked Bob Seger, “We’ve Got Tonight.”
Phillip got high praise for the first one though we thought it sucked. This song has regret and well, the title says it all – he’s begging for another chance. Frankie Valli is the only one who sings it right. Phillip just got okays for his personal pick for not bringing something more memorable, and that was not undeserved like Jessica, because this was his personal pick. But for his last performance, he got a standing ovation from ALL 3 judges and Randy said it was his best performance on the show ever. LOL. We’re sure we have lost all respect for Randy’s opinion in some other season, but really, dude? It wasn’t even good. “We’ve Got Tonight” is an inviting and sexy song when done by Bob Seger with passion and longing in it. Didn’t hear any of that, just Phillip singing the melody and getting praised up the kazoo in much the same way as the awful sibling who never behaves gets a raise in their allowance when they decide to be good for once.
So we think that if those voters who are not already locked into their favorite were to be swayed by the judges, we will be saying adios to Jessica Sanchez tomorrow night.
We just can’t see how Phillip Phillips can win this one even if he makes the Top 2, but stranger things have happened and they’ve happened right on American Idol.
OK, Joaquin, peace to you as well, even though you are not making a lot of sense to me. I never said Phillip did or said anything he didn’t do so I don’t think you really understood my analogy. But imagine if Joshua, Jessica or even Hollie performed “We’ve Got Tonight” and just sat there and sang the melody while nervously rubbing one leg, the reactions and remarks from the judges would have been A LOT different.
Fine, think what you want, but take into account that this is not just about the voice. It has nothing to do with popularity, neither, but being “the best”, exact words from Randy. What he meant by that was finding the best singer and, yes, Jessica is an extraordinary singer, but so is Phillip, otherwise he wouldn’t have reached the Top 13. And being the best implies having a lot of requirements, two of them mentioned above, and he clearly have them.
It’s not necessary to buy into the judges, they already know the potential Phillip has. And they make it clear when he sang “We’ve got tonight”, congratulating him on the great job he did. I guess they must know something about the subject, otherwise they wouldn’t be in that place.
Phillip has his own style and he’s authentic, but if you can’t see that I feel sorry for you. You could be enjoying his stuff instead of complaining about something he never said or did.
But as you said, to each his own.
Peace.
It wouldn’t be American Idol if the best singer won, would it? It’s never the best singer. It’s always a popularity contest and the fans are just too funny for words. Fiercely loyal to whoever the judges are pimping but all that love only lasts until the next season of Idol.
Oh, Joaquin, for heaven’s sake, this is a blog and I am free to express my opinion. Maybe you should watch a few Dave Matthews videos before you buy into the judges on Phillip’s “passion and originality.” If that is your idea of a perfect “We’ve Got Tonight,” hey, to each his own — that’s your personal preference. Seger happens to be mine but I’d also recommend Lulu and Ronan Keating or Elkie Brooks.
It is clear you know nothing about music and good singers. We all know that Jessica has an exceptional voice and she could may be the best singer on the show but Phillip has something more than that: passion and originality. Apart from his unique kind of voice, he always gives his best and he has a musical style never seen before.
I love Jessica but, on the other hand, she sings exactly as so many female singers that she doesn’t call my attention at all.
I feel that for some strange reasons you just don’t like Phillip, perhaps because of his personality or his big number of followers, so you are not capable of seeing how talented he is.
If you knew anything about music you would have realized that he did a great job with “We’ve got tonight” as he had to sing something completely different from what he used to sing and he could handle it just perfect.
So the next time you talk about music and artists, I recommend you to be objective and say how the situation really is.
who are you to tell, whose gonna home home!!!
Just be fair!!
