Ray Donovan Recap: A Good Man Is Hard to Find (S7 E2)

The Donovan brothers reacted to the news that their father died differently. Ray fell off the wagon but he still had business to take care of. Terry was spooked after the dead Mickey vision he had on the same day the explosion occurred. Bunchy and Daryll went to a funeral home to figure out the best way to lay Mickey to rest, when there is no body.

You were ten. What was that like for you?

The episode opened with Ray at a past visit in Dr. Amiot’s office relating an episode from his childhood that explains why he despises his father. When his mother was diagnosed with cancer, Mickey was “shackin’ up” with Claudette, leaving him and his sister to care for their mother, Maria. One night, while Ray was tending to his mother, she wet the bed. Ray went to the kitchen to get a towel to clean up and Mickey was there, helping himself to his wife’s coffee can money, about $500. Ray said Mickey patted him on the head and walked out.

I can’t make him into a murderer ~ Amber McGrath

In the present, Ray learned about Mickey’s fate at the upstate prison and was given a box with Mickey’s belongings. After a cursory search and a look at the four-leaf clover Mickey put in his wallet, Ray dumped the whole box in the trash. Ray told Lena to rustle up as much cash as she could (about $100 grand), and he went off to see Amber McGrath, widow of Sean “Mac” McGrath (who committed suicide in the Season 6 finale). Ray wanted to pay Amber all that money to go along with the story that her husband killed one or more of the cops. He told her she had to say that Mac and “Rad” Radulovitch were selling guns from the evidence room, then Rad started taking drugs. That’s when Mac drew the line and decided to do something about it and that was the last time she saw him alive. Amber agreed to do it. Ray delivered the money but then she backed out and told Ray to come get the money. He told her to keep it. Detective Perry was following Ray the whole time.

Messenger boy. You’re a pissant goon… ~ Kevin Sullivan

In between swigs from of his bottle, Ray also had time to go see Kevin Sullivan and his sister, Molly, who said: “You don’t remember me, do you?” Kevin Sullivan came out and said: “I assume you figured out who my father is now.” Ray just looked at them blankly so we’re no closer to knowing how the Sullivans figure into the Donovans’ past than we were last week. Sullivan offered Ray $1.5 million for the pictures Lena took last week. Ray declined to negotiate on behalf of Mayor Feratti. As he left, Sullivan called Ray all kinds of names, none of them nice.

Meanwhile, Stu Feldman kept ringing Ray up throughout the day with dire tales of the stalker threatening to “Nancy Kerrigan” Britney Muller and how Ray took the job and he better do it. Ray caught up with the stalker as he followed Britney to her home and put a vicious beatdown on him. Britney came running out and told Ray to stop. She said that Stu is the real problem and that’s not hard to believe at all!

You know, normally when people ask me for tickets, it’s for shows that’ll happen in the future. But for you, I will make an exception. ~ Adam Rain

Bridget helped cook up an alibi for where she, Smitty, Daryll and Ray were on the night that the cops disappeared. Jonathan Walker Hanson had a concert at Madison Square Garden that night and Bridget asked Adam Rain to get her ticket stubs. He was only too happy to accommodate her request. Lena did not fail to notice the chemistry between Adam and Bridget. Lena said she was moving back to California and wanted Bridget to promise that she would not get pregnant, “Seriously– not with Smitty, and definitely not with that guy.” Why does that make us think Bridget is already in the family way “with that guy”?

If you and your mom want a shot from “Diff’rent Strokes,” you shoulda taken it your bleepin’ self ~ Terry Donovan

Terry forgot to pick up his cell phone when he left Lady Liberty’s tea party so he did not get Ray’s message about Mickey. Daryll was the first to tell him. When Daryll and Bunchy were at the funeral home, Daryll picked out an urn and an Eternal Flame and they all arranged to meet up that evening. Now Daryll was looking for a picture of Mickey and he wanted one that he was in. Terry was quite rude about it. Daryll called his mother, Claudette, and asked her to come out for his sake.

Everyone’s wallets and cell phones now! ~ Teenage Thug

On his break at work, Bunchy was telling a co-worker how blown away he was by the news about Mick when some young thugs came in the store and tried to rob it. They had guns and were menacing, but that didn’t faze Bunchy. He demanded that one kid turn over his gun and when the kid refused, Bunchy took it and knocked him out. Then he shot the other kid who was attempting to flee. It was all on the news.

I’m the only one who didn’t shoot a priest. ~ Terry Donovan

Ray showed up pretty sloshed to the family meeting for the repose of Mickey’s soul. He proceeded to tell the story he had told Dr. Amiot about Mick stealing the coffee can money. Bridget was shocked that Ray was drinking and Smitty looked like he wanted to run away when they began recalling the priests they shot. We said it last week and we’ll say it again, Smitty is a definite liability to the Donovans. We don’t see a happy ending for him. Ray said there are no happy endings to stories about Mickey, unless Mick is the one that ends up happy. Then he had to fight hard to hold back his tears. Ray made a toast to Mickey and after they all drank up, there was a loud knocking on the door. Ray opened the door and there stood Mickey. He uttered that famous line: “Ray Ray” and Ray Ray punched him right in the kisser!

Good catch! I was trying to think of characters whose name was Sullivan …. forgot all about Sully. It’s been bugging me ever since I watched the episode.

fwiw, back in Season 1 (Episode 7) when Ray found Sully Sullivan, Sully said he heard that Ray had a son and a daughter and he said he had no family left thanks to Mickey– “they all went to prison.” He said his son Jamie got stabbed and his brother Robbie got AIDS. (Sully’s mother was in the episode though, in a nursing home.)

But the main reason I’ll be surprised if it’s Sully is because Kevin said he assumed Ray figured out “who his father is”, as if his father is alive.
