Final Jeopardy: Last Words (10-8-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/8/2019) in the category “Last Words” was:

In 1876 in the Dakotas this American said, “The old duffer broke me on the last hand”

New champ Jessica Garsed, a librarian from Augusta, ME, won $12,600 yesterday. In her second game, her opponents are: Rahul Garabadu, a judicial law clerk from Salt Lake City, UT; and Scottie Biddle, a software engineer from San Francisco, CA.

Jessica finished with a runaway $17,200 and Scottie was next with $2,800. At negative $400, Rahul was out of the game.

Only ONE of the contestants left in FJ! got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS WILD BILL HICKOK?

From Roadside America: “The most important event in Deadwood history was a poker game in Saloon #10 on August 2, 1876, where the sniveling coward Jack McCall snuck up and shot Wild Bill Hickok in the back of the head. Hickok had arrived in Deadwood only a few weeks earlier, played a succession of card games, and never in his life sat with his back to the door. Until that day.” It’s an interesting article about Deadwood’s daily summer reenactments (except Sundays) of the events surrounding Hickok’s demise.

From 2011: “D” DAY ($1200) It’s the nickname of the hand of aces & eights held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his 1876 murder

Scottie came up with Custer, who died at Little Bighorn in Montana in June of the same year. He bet and lost it all.

Jessica got it right. She bet $2,800, giving her an even $20,000 win. Her 2-day total is $32,600.

Final Jeopardy (10/8/2019) Jessica Garsed, Rahul Garabadu, Scottie Biddle

Reversal: THE MEAT INDUSTRY HALL OF FAME ($800) Nebraska’s Alan Simon made his fortune with mailable beef from this company – Jessica left the “S” off Omaha Steaks.

WOMEN COMPOSERS ($1600) British-born Rebecca Clarke gained notice with her 1919 sonata for this instrument spelled the same as a woman’s first name

Does anyone remember what the clue/answer was about Amy Beach in Women Composers? Thanks!

    • VJ says:

Hi, Kristin, here’s the clue —

  3. Richard Corliss says:

  4. Cocoa says:

Omaha Steaks is the name of the company. It has the s.

  5. Dal Higbee says:

    Unfair reversal.

  6. Kevin Cheng says:

Today, we had a first contestant this season that he or she won’t be able to play in Final Jeopardy because he or she finished with $0 or negative score. That happened to the contestant Rahul, he was dismissed and unable to play Final Jeopardy.

  7. Lou says:

Rahul is dismissed and Scott couldn’t get anything going today after missing out on the daily doubles. Did he miss out on what the category municipal before and after meant, VJ? By the way what was the exact reason that jack shot bill hickok?

    • VJ says:

I meant to post a link to the wikipedia article on Jack McCall. It says he got acquitted at his trial in Deadwood because he told them Hickok killed his brother (he didn’t have any brothers). The first trial was considered invalid because Deadwood was in Indian territory, so he couldn’t claim he was in “double jeopardy” (lol) when they brought him to trial again.

  8. VJ says:

Do ya think they’re trying to say “We REALLY want you to go from top to bottom” with that “Ra Ra” category? LOL!!
