Beat Shazam Recap: August 5, 2019

Here’s a recap of the August 5th, 2019 episode of Beat Shazam (Besties and Big Bros), featuring host Jamie Foxx and his deejay daughter, Corinne Marie. This week, Jamie said to be great at this game you have to know all types of music: “from the Spice Girls to Salt-N-Pepa, from M.C. Hammer to Percy Sledge.”

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Tara & Nichelle, best friends since high school from Salt Lake City in the Beehive State (UT)
  • Vince & Don, two brothers who have lived all over but now hail from Atlanta in the Peach State (GA)
  • Stacey & Katie, best friends and nurses from Jarrettsville in the Old Line State (MD)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. CHART TOPPERS: “Happy” (Pharrell Williams)
UT $2000 GA $0 MD $0
Everyone got it in under 2 seconds, but UT took the money at 1.34
2. POP ROCK: “Everything You Want” (Vertical Horizon)
UT $2000 GA $2000 MD $0
Everyone was right again but GA was the only team that came in under 2 seconds at 1.35
3. DUETS: “Opposites Attract” (Paula Abdul & The Wild Pair)
UT $2000 GA $2000 MD $2000
Once again, everyone got it. MD came in the fastest at 1.39 and now we’ve got a 3-way tie.
4. QUEEN: “Don’t Stop Me Now”
UT $4000 GA $2000 MD $2000
UT took the lead with the only correct title
5. FAST TRACK – MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS: “I Will Always Love You” (Whitney Houston, “The Bodyguard”)
UT $4000 GA $6000 MD $2000
Everyone got it but GA was the only one under two seconds at 1.03. Wow! That was a lot closer to one second

That was a competitive round. Vince & Don (GA) took the lead with that Fast Track win. No team is too far behind to feel disadvantaged going into Round 2.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Two votes went to WOODSTOCK right away so Coachella was out.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “Magic Bus” (The Who)
UT $4000 GA $9000 MD $2000
GA had the only correct title. Everyone else had “I Can’t Explain”
2. “White Rabbit” (Jefferson Airplane)
UT $4000 GA $9000 MD $5000
MD nailed this one at 1.21 to beat UT. GA had another Jefferson Airplane hit, “Somebody to Love”
3. “Purple Haze” (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
UT $4000 GA $12,000 MD $5000
GA took this at 1.11 to MD’s 1.41. UT had “Voodoo Child”
4. FAST TRACK: “Down on the Corner” (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
UT $4000 GA $18,000 MD $5,000
Everyone knew it but GA knew it the fastest at 1.44

Sadly for UT, their 1.61 on that Fast Track song didn’t get them what they needed to stay on, so Tara & Nichelle had to go home. Vince & Don (GA) have a $13,000 lead over Stacey & Katie (MD) going into Round 3.

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice this week is: Hall & Oates
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Kiss On My List”
GA $23,000 MD $5000
GA got this one with the right title. MD had “Out of Touch”
2. “Sara Smile”

MD pulled it off the fastest: 1.55 to GA’s 1.97
3. “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”

4. FAST TRACK: “Rich Girl”
GA $28,000 MD $20,000
MD had the right title. GA went with “You Make My Dreams”

Stacey & Katie (MD) chopped Vince & Don’s (GA) lead down a bit with that last song. Now the guys have an $8,000 lead as we head into the deciding round, where a lot of money is at stake but it’s tougher than a Texas judge!

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Every Little Step” (Bobby Brown)

GA had the right title. MD had “I Wanna Sex You Up”
2. “Wonderwall” (Oasis)
GA $38,000 MD $30,000
MD took it at 2.03 to GA’s 2.19. The ladies are not going down without a fight!
3. “Downtown” (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis)
GA $38,000 MD $30,000
No one got it. GA had “Westside” and MD had “Thrift Shop”
4. FAST TRACK: “Tell Me Something Good” (Rufus Ft. Chaka Khan)
GA $58,000 MD $30,000
GA got it at 1.71 to MD’s 2.01

Stacey & Katie (MD) needed that last song to continue, but it didn’t work out. They are still taking home $15,000, a very nice haul for an hour of fun. Vince & Don (GA) are going on to the last round to take on Shazam and try to get that million dollars we keep hearing about.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Girl Groups: “Chapel of Love” (The Dixie Cups) – Don gave the lyric “We’re going to the chapel” and Vince chimed in with their final answer, “Going to the Chapel.” Their mom was laughing.
2. Hip Hop: “Air Force Ones” (Nelly Ft. Kyjuan, Ali & Murphy Lee) – Air Force Ones – “They jumped on that before the song played,” Jamie said. $78,000
3. Hair Bands: “Once Bitten Twice Shy” (Great White) – They couldn’t come up with something in time on this one.
4. 2000s: “Move Along” (The All-American Rejects) Don was on top of this in a flash $108,000
5. R&B: “Shining Star” (The Manhattans) – Again, Don was right on it and Jamie said “Don has the ability to know the song before the song is even played.” They began the round with $58,000 and finished with $133,000.

Vince and Don can’t play for the million but they still have the opportunity to double their money. If they decide to play this last song and they are right, they will win $266,000. If they play Shazam and lose, they will lose half their money and will take home $66,500. It all depends on how comfortable they are with the category. Jamie revealed it to help them decide: Divas. Vince reminded Don that they agreed beforehand that if the category was not in their wheelhouse, they would walk, but he did feel that Don could handle it. Don didn’t seem to fully agree. Ultimately, Vince said that they know the category fairly well, but they were “family first.” Not being 100% confident, they just were not willing to risk that amount of money. They played the song for fun and it turned out the opposite of what happened last week. They knew Celine Dion’s 1999 hit, “That’s the Way It Is” right away!

Well, that was quite a shock to the fellas but we can never say they were wrong to not take that chance because the possibility of losing half was very real. So they are taking home $133,000 and should have no regrets about that.
